I picked this cam after talking to Comp Cams anybody using one. Curious on idle rpm and power band.

They sold me the same cam, according to the Dyno2000 software you should see 450hp/516ft

In my book, too much cam for a larger jetboat. Lobe center is good, lift is good, but too much duration. That cam is probably rated for 2500rpm to 6500 or higher. It will work, but I think there are better choices available. That's a little more cam than I have in my v-drive. Mine is 3000-6000 rpm, 228dur. @.050" and .544 lift. It has a nice lope at 800rpm in gear idle. Clears out about 2500, and pulls hard all the way up through. Mine is a Crane Powermax H302

I had the Lunati with .230/.230 dur @ .050 and .544/.544 lift. Engine is 468bbc, 9.6 compression, ported oval port heads with 2.19/1.88 valves, logs. tall single plane and 780 and stock HEI.
It turned a tight A impeller 5200rpm, which according to the pump charts is 435 HP.
It looped just a little dry, but when the water hit the exhaust you couldnt hear the lope at all.
If I did it again I would go with a bigger cam, much like the one you picked. It always felt like it wanted more cam and carburation, but with out headers I didnt feel I would get the full effect of going bigger, so I didnt see much point in changing anything.

I agree with ducky about keeping it at 230@.50
I would like to hear your results with the cam you chose. I havent picked my cam yet so I would like to compare results with my buddies boat.

The way I got it was that if you go extream keep your lob seperation wide so you dont injest water at part throtal. I'm running 112 I will let you know how it runs when its done

Should be firing it up in a couple a weeks, should be interesting. Biggest cam I've ever run :D

Hey KC, I've got a pretty similiar Clay Smith Cam. It's a 570 lift, 240@ .050, 108 lobe separation. Although I have OT headres, I love the way sounds. Kinda ratta-tat-tat @ 900-1000rpm. I don't do a lot of skiing with it but don't see why I couldn't. It cruises nice @ 3,000 rpm which equals 30mph for me. I max out at about 5400. (I think a nice sweet spot in the cam).
What else you got in that 454? I still think I'm fairly mild with 9.5 to 1 comp. Although I do have some nice heads, the 049 oval' w/ some nice porting work and the bigger valves. I think as long as you have 9.0 to 1+, that should be a nice cam for you. :D
