Nice,

Here's how the weekend went
Saturday: Had the starter and ran the boat for 30 minutes on the hose with no problems. Left the fuel on the fat side and set timing at 32 degrees. Then we went drinking and gambliing for the rest of the day. (Wife's B-Day)
Sunday: Had to fix the starter again because the bushing came out. Staked it in. Went to Colusa and launched. Fired up with 80lbs of oil pressure. Went up river. I did do a quick throttle blast but only to about 5500 rpm. Then about 1 mile up river the sherriff pulled me over for a db check and safety check. Passed with 89 db's. All legal. Started back up river again. Still 80psi with 130 on the temp. Still never took it over 4k rpms. Started hearing something. Not a knock or valve train noise just didn't sound right. Ran for about 10 sec longer and it got a little louder but still not noisy. Thats where I shut it down and was towed back in.

Fiat48

Too much invested to guess. Get it out and get the pan off. Otherwise you don't sleep.
But pay attention to anything loose while pulling it out. I doubt you'd hear a bearing over the motor. And oil pressure was still up there.

Maybe a bearing?Mike, A newly rebuilt engine will turn the oil ugly in no time at all. It more than likely just debris from normal break-in. Split the filter open and check for flakes and chunks.

Mike, I agree with 058 about the oil.
Since this is a noise you can't easily define, and you have never run a blower before, maybe it is not engine-related but blower-related. Just something to consider before tearing the whole thing apart.

Ok I cut the filter and I only found the usual new motor crap. No metal. Had the blower belt off and it spun freely. I pulled the plugged and all of them looked the same with no signs of detonation. I did a compression test and all came in close to 150 +/- 1 or 2 lbs.
Still didn't like what I was hearing and want to pull the motor. Got that gut feeling that something is wrong. I don't know what but I want to make damn sure before I run it again. To much money invested and if I caught it early enough thats less money I have to spend again.

Just pretend you are a big time fuel racer. Make a pass or two and tear her down. Then do it again and again till you have to helicoil the pan bolts. Or Hell..I forgot...they make those quick drop pans for those Mopar fuel racers. Get one of those.
Remember...it's the hard that makes it great.

I'm going to haul it south friday after changing the oil and use Canyon Boats borescope to take a look inside the cylinders. I called about 6 different machinists that all said there wasn't enough material to say something is wrong. One even looked at the filter and said that what he saw was normal for a new motor with an hour on it. So if it works it works if not oh well.

I finally had a few free moments to wash the block and get it ready to assemble.
I start setting the bearings in, set the crank, TRY and set the thrust bearing in the cap, and the fuking thrust surface is bigger than the relief in the cap. The block relief clears by .100 or better. The cap is short by .15 or better.
Damn block was taken out of my dads car years ago by me, and was original as best as I could tell. I couldn't even fit the bearing shell into the cap. When I built it last time the bearings fit fine, but I guess the thrust surface wasn't as big on the last bearings, at least I can guess.
Seems to me the cap should have been machined at the same time the caps were. What do I know.
Looks like I get to machine the cap tommorrow.
Brian
