1) 2004 30' Advantage Vicory "V" (850 HP) Twin 496 HO's
2) Progressive
3) 2 years
4) about $1000/yr
5) 300K (liability); Replacement value, diminishing deductible
6) Had to change from the company that insured our Four Winns due to the HP involved in this new boat. They said since I didn't have 2yrs experience with it (it is a new boat!) they wouldn't insure it. If I remember the company was through boat us - will have to check records at home.
Regarding the 850 HP and Progressive - the local company had to call for permission from head office (or somewhere) because of the HP. They wouldn't buy the claim that it was safer because of the bone stock twins...
7) no claims yet.

4. Approx. $2200 per year, no layup

6. I called over 31 insurance agencies before I found one that would do it. The combination of catamaran hull, length, and hp (800hp) made it almost impossible to insure. I was about to trade it in for a damn Baja before the engine was even completed because I couldn't find coverage.

$300,000 Liability for bodily injury and property damage includes fuel spill

Included in comp is Disappearing Deductible, wreck removal, marine electronics, trailer

Costal nav up to 75 miles
Renewal was an increase from $1350 last year.
No claims
Two changes this year:
"Coverage under this part IV does not apply to any loss while in the care, custody, or control of anyone engaged in the business of selling the covered watercraft"
"Coverage under this part IV does not apply to any loss that is due and confined to smog, humidity, mildew, mold, freezing, thawing or extreme temp."
I called several insurance companies and only found 2 other companies, ACE and Markel, that would insure me. Both were around $2700 a year.
When shopping for coverage most responses were NO for more than 500 hp and/or speeds above 60 mph.
I will keep my opinion of that industry off the boards. Call me. :D

Hey Starloans,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news... Progressive does not insure any boat that has 500+ hp. Make sure your agent has the correct info., otherwise you are wasting your money. I will send you their (Progressive's) underwritting guidlines if you want. Call me @ 714-895-7050
Shawn
P.S. Progressive is a great company to be insured with, you just want to be sure they know what they are insuring in case you have a claim.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. I spoke to American Marine 3 times when I got the policy. They called the MFG, checked the merc website, double checked with the actual underwriter, etc. The engine is rated 525 at the crank and 490 at the prop (depending on who you talk to). I repeatedly reminded them of the crank hp and they assured me that it was acceptable to use the prop hp. If I remember, they initally thought it was a 525SC and I had to give them pics of the engine. Once they knew it was the HP525 and not the SC they were fine. I think I covered my ass pretty good on it. I was honest with them.
Here's what MAY be the case. I broker mortgages like American Marine brokers insurance. Take Countrywide Home Loans for instance. The retail branch has different underwriting guidelines than the wholesale branch. Broker guidelines are stricter on some things and more lienent on other things. I know this for a fact. The only thing I can think of is I must have fit into the insurance brokers guidelines.
I'm sure that is the one of the things that Spaise is trying to determine here is the consistincy of insurance. If you ask me insurance companies as a whole is a gray murky business to start with. They pick and choose who, what and where they want to insure. No offense to you. I'm sure some people have the same experience with mortgages. It's not an exact science. I have done many loans for people the were turned down by Wells, BofA, and WaMu only to have my brokered loan sold to those very banks. Thanks for the info.

Here's our info Kevin....
1. 1996 Conquest Deckboat
2. Progressive Ins.
3. New policy-since December, 2004
4. $1100/year
5. 1/2 mil liability, 1/2 mil uninsured boater. 5k medical per person. agreed value 96k, some towing and personal effect coverage as well. Roadside assistance included in our policy.
6. We could not find insurance for a boat we wanted to get before we found the Conquest. It was a 22ft. tunnel hull with a HP 500 in it. It seems like no one but Ace or Markel will touch anything over 500hp, and there's lay-ups as well. Our Conquest has 490hp, so we're right at the cut-off for Progressive.
It was the best decision we ever made-- we love the Conquest!

How the hell is your policy 4k for a boat probably worth 200k-250k and mine quote through the same company with the same coverages is 3585???WTF?
And my value is 1/2 of yours!
There are a few reasons here. First, my last boat was a 2004 Magic 34 cat with 575's that I had under insured in terms of value. I only insured that boat to protect the loan, or satisfy the loan company. The loan was small on that boat compared to what the purchase price is, insured for under $100k.
When I sold that boat in March, I ordered another one right away (stupid, I know but that is what I ended up being happy with). Insurance policies are not getting any cheaper, so we did not cancel my 2004 that I sold and just replaced my '04 with the '05 on my policy. The 05 has the same model motors. This allowed them to not have to write me as an entirely new policy, which would have been about $5500.
I didn't get a credit for not having a boat for 3 months, so I was out $900. My last policy went from $4200/year to $3600/year after owning the boat 1 year. I have a perfect driving record as well, so that helps... a very small little.
Also, $8000 deductible. :frown:
This boat is a little underinsured, but I didn't want to risk it being outrageous to insure with yearly premiums. It is still more than double my loan amount which makes me feel better about underinsuring it. Small gamble.
Who is the agent quoting your policy. They add whatever commission to these that they like, so maybe that is some of the difference. Also, new policies are much more expensive today than they were 18 months ago.
The market really sucks for us, the customer.

Insurance God

Starloans,
No offense taken. 500hp @ the prop is fine. Some markets (Markel for one) don't allow prop hp., but Progressive does.
Also, to answer the question above. Progresive will allow a max of 1,000 hp or 500hp per engine. So, two 496HO's are fine.

Insure you boat the way that it makes you comfortable. But I bet the 250 deductable is kicking your premium up. You may try 750 deductable only if you can live with it. You should also shop next time you renew. I think this thread would be a good place to start. Good luck.

Markel was the only company that would touch it, I was with allstate for 15 years prior. I called them (allstate) before ordering this boat and asked for a quote. My agent came back with something like $650 a year, which I thought was fair, when I finally recieved the boat, I called my agent and he said sorry allstate doesn't insure tunnel/cat hulls. Knowing this info prior, we probally would have chosen a different hull.

Called them about the new boat before we had it built.....no problem but the new coverage will be $1100/yr. Ok. Then when the new boat arrives they say "We don't insure cats." So we pulled everything we had with them (for over 10 yrs). Only Markel ($6700/yr.) or Sea-Safe would insure and Sea-Safe required yrs. of cat experience.
7. No claims....13 yrs. of boating

Now what is this 4month lay up? most of you are talking about?A secified amount of time that the insurance company will cover for storage, but not boat use... 4 month layup means the boat will not be used during this time, but stored; As a result, the premium is lowered. :)
Andy01 told me that he can call the ins company at any time to pay for "day" use during the layup... or something like that.... Maybe he can elaborate..

It's a bit confusing but...... Devin Wozencraft is a farmers agent out of Orange County. He also works closely with Markel. He managed to get me a better rate with Markel than I could get going directly with Markel. Everything regarding the boat specs is completely honest. To tell you the truth I don't know how he does it. But I do know that he has helped alot of Peeps obtain insurance on our hard to insure cats.

6. No claims and hope to not have any, knock on wood.
TG was added to my existing policy when i had the Nordic, and Allstate does not want Cigs., therefore i will probably get non-renewed

This is my third boat policy with them. My agent tells me not to cancel the policy when I sell a boat, we just reduce the coverage to a minimum. He says it gives me better rates because I am not underwritten as a new policy when I buy the next one.
7. Any claims, and if so, how did they affect your rate?

open engine, ot headers
$15,000 actual loss coverage.
100/300K comp
$375/year
$500 deductible.
I do have to specify to keep the value the same every year or they depreciate it.
I think though, the boat has to be sunk or stolen.
I did answer the question of how fast it goes (over or under 50mph) with I don't know because it doesn't have a speedometer, but I doubt over 50. That really can't be proven Anyway.

After SF denied a claim because my engines had been modified I started the Insurance Search. My boat is a '97 Black Thunder 43 foot with twin 750 HP NA EFI engines. The only reasonable insurer that I could find was American National Property and Casualty. I had to move all my insurance but that was fine with me. I had been with SF for 25 years.
