Record Oil Company Profits Underscore Market Consolidation
Top Five Oil Companies Control Most of Domestic Oil market; Consumers Suffer
Public Citizen
June 7th, 2001
WASHINGTON, DC, May 31, 2001 -- Oil companies are collecting record profits while consumers get drilled at the gas pumps, underscoring the iron grip the companies have over virtually every aspect of the oil market, a Public Citizen analysis shows.
In the first three months of this year, profits for the five largest oil companies operating in the U.S. rose nearly 40 percent over the same period last year, data show. The companies are involved in all facets of the industry, from exploration, production and refining to distribution and retail sales.
In the wake of recent oil company mergers, the five companies -- Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Texaco, BP Amoco-Arco, Phillips-Tosco and Marathon -- control more than two-fifths of domestic production, nearly half of the domestic refining and more than three-fifths of the domestic retail market. These top five oil companies are so big that they produce more oil than Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Yemen combined. A copy of Public Citizen's report "No Competition: Oil Industry Mergers Provide Higher Profits, Leave Consumers With Fewer Choices" is available at: http://www.citizen.org/cmep/restructuring/report53001.pdf
"Consumers are getting hosed when they go to the gas pumps this summer because a handful of corporations control our oil and gas market," Public Citizen President Joan Claybrook said. "There is no petroleum crisis, so opening up wilderness areas to oil drilling, as the Bush-Cheney energy plan envisions, will do nothing to help consumers. What we are seeing is the predictable result of a monopoly market. It allows the oil companies to artificially control prices."

Wednesday, ConocoPhillips reported a 51% spike in second-quarter profit to $3.1 billion; Kerr-McGee's earnings more than tripled to $371 million; Amerada Hess' profits rose 3.8% to $299 million. I hope some people don't just blow this off as this is a problem. This is why you can't have all these oil corporations merge. They will get away with this until they are made to dismantle but in the mean time we pay for it. Do you think that most people get a cost of living raise each year to keep up with health insurance and fuel alone. There will be a time when it will go so far that it will burst. Just wondering if anyone saw the documentary-style show on FX a few months ago called "Oil Storm"?

I wonder the same thing? He dosen't even talk about the health care problem anymore. (Just make it $5.00 a gallon) it will be there I see it going to $6.00 to 6.50 and that's when all hell will break. All the airlines will be BK among other bussiness. But he will leave all this for the next Pres (Rep-Dem) to take care of.

This was last year when a barrel of oil was $43.05!!!!!!
Soaring prices for oil, gas and refined products added up to near-record results for integrated companies, such as Exxon Mobil, which pump oil, turn it into gasoline and then market it through service stations around the world.
Despite predictions that energy prices cannot sustain their historic highs, traders continue to pour into oil, gas and product futures.
On Wednesday oil futures set a new 14-year high of $43.05 a barrel, as worries about disruptions in Russia, Nigeria and the Middle East edged out evidence that rising OPEC production is replenishing inventories worldwide.

The Bush Family 'Oiligarchy'
By Sam Parry
Many of George W. Bush's senior foreign policy advisers also have close ties to the oil industry.
Condoleeza Rice, George W.'s chief foreign policy aide and leading candidate to serve as his national security adviser, has been a director of Chevron Corp. since 1991. Rice is currently in charge of public policy for Chevron's board of directors, which has used her expertise in Russian issues to help Chevron navigate its way to investments in the Caspian Sea oil fields.
In 1993, Rice was granted a rare honor when Chevron named an oil tanker after her.
Lawrence Eagleburger, a seasoned Bush counselor who held top State Department posts under George W.'s father, is a director of Halliburton Corp., the world's largest oil field services company.
When looking for a running mate, George W. also turned to Halliburton. He asked Dick Cheney, Halliburton's chairman and chief executive, first to vet other candidates and later to take the job. With Cheney at Halliburton's helm for the past five years, the Dallas-based company grew into a global juggernaut, now with two-thirds of its business overseas. It has business in nearly 130 countries, counts about 700 wholly and partly owned subsidiaries, employs more than 100,000 workers worldwide, and boasts a 1999 income of $15 billion. [AP, July 26, 2000]
Halliburton's global network of investments includes projects in politically volatile areas, some with savage human rights records. Other countries, where Halliburton has subsidiaries, have come under criticism for bank secrecy.
The nations where Halliburton does business include oil-producers such as Nigeria, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Libya, Angola and Russia. The company's roster of subsidiaries also lists companies in offshore banking havens, such as the Cayman Islands, Barbados, Panama, Cyprus and Vanuatu. [Halliburton's annual report, March 2000]

(Washington, D.C.) – Domestic petroleum companies have stuck U.S. gasoline and natural gas consumers with about $250 billion in price hikes since January 2000, resulting in an increase in after-tax windfall profits of $50 to $80 billion to the industry, a report released today by the Consumer Federation of America and Consumers Union concluded. The groups are calling on federal and state authorities to investigate oil company price manipulation as one way to bring prices down to more reasonable levels in the near terms and a strong commitment to increased fuel efficiency in the automobile fleet for the long term.
The report, entitled Fueling Profits: Industry Consolidation, Excess Profits & Federal Neglect, Domestic Causes of Recent Gasoline and Natural Gas Price Shocks, shows While OPEC has taken a bite out of consumer’ pocketbooks, domestic companies have taken about three quarters of the price increases since January 2000. The report attributes about half of the price increases to changes in domestic pricing behavior that was created by a wave of mergers that swept through the industry in the past decade.
“The industry became concentrated in the hands of a few vertically integrated companies and allowed domestic oil companies shut down refineries, reduce stocks, and exploit markets when they become tight,” said Mark Cooper, CFA’s Director of Research. “Since these price increases were about padding the corporate bottom line, not about responding to increased costs, petroleum industry profits have risen to record highs over the period.
“Based on results from the first quarter of this year, domestic petroleum industry profits are headed for another record with refining and marketing profits up about 50 percent compared to the first quarter of 2003, Cooper added.”

This is from yesterday's edition of that hallowed publication "Land Line Magazine" printed by the OOIDA:
Crude oil, diesel prices continue to set records
Both crude oil and diesel prices set records on Thursday, Aug. 11, with crude oil topping $66 per barrel and diesel prices reaching as high as $3.43 per gallon in California.
Trading for light, sweet crude lurched beyond $66 per barrel in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Thursday, before dropping back down closer to the $65 mark.
Meanwhile, ProMiles reported an average price of $3.01 per gallon for California on Aug. 11. Individual stations, however, were pushing prices well beyond that. A Shell station in Pasadena confirmed for “Land Line Now” that its diesel was selling at $3.43 Thursday morning. Several other stations had posted prices between $3.30 and $3.40 per gallon, according to the Web site CaliforniaGasPrices.com.
Refinery troubles and tight supplies are being blamed for skyrocketing diesel costs in California, but a Los Angeles Times story revealed there may be another reason.
The Times reported that, in June, oil traders sold large quantities of diesel to Chile and Mexico. At the time, traders maintain, they were faced with an oversupply of diesel, so they sold some of the surplus to buyers in Chile. The fuel that went to Mexico was said to have too much sulfur content to be used in the United States.
Unfortunately, the timing was bad. The sale occurred just days before a fire shut down a Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, CA. So without the surplus, the state was unable to handle the post-fire shortage.
Because of the fire, Chevron has limited sales to its own stores and to customers with supply contracts.

I call BS. Funny to see the experts say it's having little effect on our fast growing economy. Am I the only one who thinks this is BS too? The rising cost of fuel is affecting my companies bottom line. Every time the price jumps up over the weekend our trucks fuel lines are cut and what little fuel is left in them is stolen. This is now a common occurrence in the Scottsdale air park.
I thought it was our technology that made it possible for these 3rd world dumps to pump raw crude. How about Kuwait & Mexico Time for them to pay up. We saved one dump and house the others people.
