A bottle of wine would be good.
They can always either use it that night or save for another time.

You can't go wrong with two bottles of wine, one white one red...could go with whatever they are serving.
If you know their preference, bring liquer or beer that they prefer is a good choice also.
Have fun drinking and eating and make sure you leave the bottles behind - full or empty!
The last dinner guest we had (his last day in Wichita before moving to North Carolina) brought a pack of Bud bottles and a 1/2 full 5 gallon gas can - both he didn't want to haul back east. I thought I made out pretty well! So the key is knowing what your hosts would like.

It depends on whose house it is. Possibly a dog and a bottle of wine. :D

IMO you definitely don't need flowers.....wine is good if they are wine drinkers

Too many people come empty-handed which is not a good thing!
Wine always works. And you can always bring dessert even if they have it, no one ever complains when there's a choice of desserts (and you're sure to have something you like) :D

On the subject of wine to parties... One thing a lot of people are really intimidated by is bringing a bottle of wine to someone's house who is a real wine drinker. Coming from Sonoma, wineau capital of the world, this happens probably more often than not, and noone wants to show up with a shitty bottle of garbage just because you didn't know any better and liked the label... ;)
A really good way for anyone who is not exactly a connoisseur to bring a great bottle of wine to a wino's house is to find out what kind of food they are serving (Italian, steaks, etc...) and phone a local high-end restaurant that serves the same type of food and find out what their house red and whites are. Chances are they will be very, very paletable, will likely impress even hardcore snobs and has the added benefit of not breaking the bank.
The managers and somaliers at these restaurants spend a lot of time and money choosing the best house wines that have a great balance between quality and cost. Let them do the research. ;)
