WOW!!!
What an opportunityÂ…..
While looking at a project for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) I was given a personal tour of the Iron Mountain Pump Plant by one of the site engineersÂ…Â…
This pump plant is on Rice Road, about 7 miles past the Hwy 62 turn off and is the 3rd of 5 pumping stations required to get water from Havasu to the main reservoirs of Mathews (Riverside) & Diamond Valley Lake (Hemet).
If you can believe it……”ONE BILLION GALLONS” of water flow through here a day…..
The system was constructed in 1937 and came on-line in 1939. The gravity fed sections of the system were designed using the old Roman formula of 1Â’ of drop over a mile. In some cases it is able to drop greater than 1Â’ over a mile.

http://www2.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/1780Iron_Mountain_Pump_Plant_Tour_040.jpg
This is the main feed into the plant with the overflow basin to the leftÂ…..
If the flow was too much and filled up the basin, the overflow would run into the desert..

A total of (9) 4,300 HP, 6,900 Volt electric motorsÂ…..all circa 1937Â…..are used to pump the 1 Billion gallons of water up and over Iron Mountain on the way to the next stationÂ…Â…

You know what is really amazing is the vision the leaders of this great state had.
Look at all of the water delivery system for the state of California.
The system from the Colorodo River, the california aquaduct, the project from owens valley, the calif delta, the central valley project.
This used to be a great state, now all of the enviromental wacko's want to state for themselfs, & the hell progress.
They should be the first ones to suffer, lets impose all members of the sierra club with higher gas prices than what we common people are allready paying, let's say a $1;00 a gallon more than we pay now.
For all of the progress that they have stiffeled.

All this done with a vision, a brain, slide-rule (not a computer), "REAL hard work" (not the percieved hard work of today.....you know.....The "I bust my ass all day long and give 100% every day"...group), dedication and pride.....

Would anybody be interested ???? Maybe on a Friday ???
I'll ask how big or small of a group we could have.....

SNS, that is too cool.
This proves I'm not the only one turned on by this stuff. :)
I've worked at Edmonston Pumping Station (http://ludb.clui.org/ex/i/CA4967/), looks very similiar. Engineering on these places is unbelievable.
Thanks for the tour, I'm interested if you get one at the Havasu site.

Would love to check that out. I'm an Operating Engineer. What I would do for a job out there. I just missed a trip with DWP checking out the Owens valley delivery system last month. I think my boss knows I'd be tryin to get a job with them if I had the chance. Love that 48" valve. I could go on for days with this stuff. Oh and no chicks if we go. It's like taking them to Hoover Dam . "C'mon let's go you have to come here everytime we go Vegas!" :notam:

I studied water in the west in college for a year and love all the cool old school diagrams and maps.

Thanks for this post, those are some awesome photos of a great system. I have been working in this field for many years and everytime I go into a new or old plant it still amazes me.
Please allow me to correct your speed. Those units turn at 300 RPM. For this size unit it is still moving a lot of "reprocessed" coors.

Nice pics Shaken!I toured their plant at Havasu which looks very similar to the one at Iron mountain.Arizona has a similar water delivery system with the Central Arizona Project which takes water from Lake Havasu and delivers it through canal systems all the way to Tucson. They have a website with pics @ www.cap-az.com

Hey Sigus,
All we get is redx's, prolly we don't have permission for where you stashed your pics.
Try modding the url's or moving the pics to another site?
Just a suggestion.
