hey garry I was wondering if you could tell me how hot the exhaust is when it is coming out of your heads? I was thinking of spraying my bassetts with some of that high heat paint.I know how to apply the paint, and that you have to bake the paint on at 400 degrees for 2 hrs. I was just wondering if the paint would stay on after I do all this.Oh yea my headers are dry also.

I've used that paint on my old race bug motor header and it worked fine for a temp. but i would plan on jet coating them in the near future. It scratches pretty easy then rust, same old crap different day.

1300 to 1500 degrees.

damn that's hot!,Okay here's another one I guess from my headers being dry, instead fo them being blue they are brown, does anyone know a way to get them to come back to chrome, some kind of polish maybe?I'm gonna have them jet hotted but I have jetfest coming up and no time left.

Hey Randall....... personally, I've never seen anything that would bring chrome back from blue. The crotch rocket guys are always talking about something, but I've never seen anything. EGT's about 1 1/2" out into the header primaries are between 1050 and 1350, normally, on a 1/4 mile run. On a lake boat on a long, long run at full throttle, they will probably get hotter than that. I've never used any of the header paints, but one of the drag car guys that I build motors for uses it and it stinks like hell. Referring back to the EGT's, I've seen near 1500 on a very lean pass for a microsecond. I think aluminum melts a little over 1200 degrees if held there more than just a very few seconds. JUST FYI, the highest EGT's I've ever seen were in an extermely rich condition where there was raw fuel burning in the headers and I think we saw about 1600. The guy thought it was lean and kept richening it up, when there was a flooding problem to start with.

I ran the same set of Rewarder headers on my drag boat for 5 years and the only blue on them was right out of the head. They have never had water on them. Lake boats build more heat in the headers because they are run further. A good tune up will go a long way in extending the life of the finish on your headers.

Well Spit....... It will happen lower than that if the temp is sustained.

I double-checked my notes and aluminum melts at 1220 degrees, but that must be sustained for several seconds. And "Spit"......... you can confirm this, if you do a little looking around. The higher the temp above that, the quicker it will melt.

I've run between 1250 to 1300 degress at WOT for several years with out any sign of piston melt down.My EGT was recommended to be placed 1" from the heads. That was one of the first things i bought when i got a boat.I've also called the tech line at JE/SRP before i built the engine and they said if you keep it in the 1300 range it will be fine.Just to clear up what i meant was if he was going to buy a can of high heat paint he should buy it to cover up to 1500 degrees to be safe.

I agree with what you are saying, but those temps can't be run for prolonged periods. I run data acquisition sysytems on several of the cars and boats that we run out of our shop. My Pro Limited Jet seemed to run best with EGT's arond 1280, while our Top Sportsman car likes 1180's in the 1/4 mile and about 1100 in the 1/8th mile. What I am referring to on the 1220 meltdown is this, you can heat aluminum to 1200 degrees for a long time and it won't melt. If you heat it to 1220, it will begin to melt in a short period of time and the higher the temp above that, the less time it takes it to start the meltdown. The 1220 melting point for aluminum is a scientific fact. And,TX-19, I think you have a sharp boat.

Hey TX.... I still have it. Lots of tire kickers and folks wanting to trade. That's going to be my new aluminum 9" Ultra Case third member for my Outlaw Top Sportsman car.

I'll do that. I'm having so much trouble trying to get product from Aggressor that I guess I need to go to another supplier. I may try to work a deal on some new stainless.
