I just pulled the plugs out of my 454, because I blew one out last trip to the lake, and found that they were gaped at .016 to .020. This seemed very tight to me. The replacements are Bosh platinum gaped at .040. Can onyone tell me if I have to gap the Bosh plugs to .016?
The boat is new to me and I have no referance manual, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Steve

It would depend on the type of ignition system you're running. Mags run a tight gap in the realm of .018 because they don't produce the voltage at low rpm to fire anything wider. Most other systems though don't run anything that narrow. Point type systems generally are around .030-.035. Most electronics are in the neighborhood of .040 clear up to .060. These are all general figures. Go with what the manufacturer of your ignition system recommends as well as the type of spark plug they recommend.

Thanks Mike
It has an old style point type ignition with a small chrome coil. I'll put the new plugs at .035 and then go from there. Thanks for the info.
