What about you Taylorman? You been talkin about selling the Olds, you still gonna jump to the Chevy or what?

I think im just gonna keep what i have. My olds does ok. Im gonna keep it like it always has been since my dad owned it. The Olds has some sentimental value. Im in the process of making/ordering a rail kit for it. Gonna do a little pump work, maybe a new cam to break 70 mph. Well see. I just cant justify the money to swap to a 454 right now when i have so much in the olds.

I heard that. Besides, it's something a little different. That's always cool! I mean, it runs its ass off already & is dependable. You have fun with it, why change it? I considered putting a Chevy in mine when it crapped out. Buddy of mine has a damn good 468, but just the cost of the accessories(Headers, motor mounts, etc.) was enough to change my mind!!

I hear that. I think we are gonna be ok this time. We put together another set of heads that would be better for his engine. The machine shop that built the engine said the spring preasure on his old ones was to blame for his cam problems.

When I broke in my new cam from DuaneHTP, he reccomended I leave the inner springs out of the heads and only run the outers and the damper for the break-in. I left them out for about 8 running hours too since my cam is only a .565" moderate lift and I was only pulling 4700 or so breaking in the rest of the 454. Was no problems. She's got all the springs now and runs hard.

That,I guess, is a pretty safe bet, but I have always broken cams in with the full spring in place and have never had any problem with unusual cam wear. And I build motors every day. A lot of the motors we build are well over .800 lift with spring pressures close to 400# on the seat and I use that same break-in procedure. I think the best deal is to make sure your adjustments are right and have the tune up in the ball park when you start it, then do the 1500 to 1800 rpm deal for about 20 minutes. Works for me.
