Got my first boat, Nordic 22' Viking. It has a volvo penta 290 w/ SB 350 pretty much bone stock. Has open exhaust and "mild" cam ( dont know what it is) Im upgrading the Ingition to an HEI , Replacing the Quadra jet with better unit ( proably a Holly 650). and other bolt on crap. will I be over powering the Volvo 290?

Never. They are tough- I ran over 450HP through mine...no worries.
Just make sure you motor has an idle below 800 RPMs (they hate hard shifts), and keep fishing wire off the propshaft (wrecks the seals...gets water in).

All the rest of these guys have Mercruisers, and no other hobbies.
Step 1: Stick with the Quadrajet. If you don't have fatter needles on the secondaries to match the exhaust, get some from edelbrock #1951 (0.410)
2: get a 14 1/2 x 21 stainless prop. They are available cheap. (Nobody else is trying to outbid you on ebay for a Volvo prop)
3: Forget HEI, not suted for a family boat. Convert whatever distributor you have (Mallory?) to a Perlux.
4; Buy extended nose cold plugs. I use Nippondenso.
5: Buy a big fat K&N marine spark arrestor.
6: Cross your fingers that you have intake manifold number #14096011. If not, buy one. Amazing difference.
