Hi,
I am thinking about having my Gen VI 454 stroked when I have it gone through. What is the max. that this block can safely be bored??. It really only needs a light honing , but I want to replace the crank rods and pistons with forged and have it all balanced anyway. I'm thinking 496, which if I have read correctly is a 4.25 stroke with a .060 over bore.
Thanks
Kirk

I believe you can punch it out to 4.500 without trouble. Put a 4.250 inch stroke crank kit in it, and you get a 540CID. If you had a truck-block 427, you could make a 572 on a 4.500 stroke.  Ya need the tall-deck truck block there tho.

.060 to .070 safe. . . .100" to .125" but you need to have the cylinders sonic tested.

First off your block is a 4.25 bore x 4.00 stroke. The merc 496 is a 4.25 bore x 4.375 stroke. A 4.50 bore is no chance. A 4.28 or 4.31 bore is more reasonable and doable. You can then go to 4.25 stroke and make a 496 that way (4.31x4.25) New crank, new rods, new pistons, lots of machine work, clearance work. Find a Gen VI 502 short block and bolt everything on, easier, maybe cheaper. A 502 is a 4.47x4.00.
