Have what I believe to be a stock 454 4 bolt with tunnel ram, 2 600's in my Sanger and would like to know if a nitros system would be any good or feasible? sic? Which one?
What mods should I do first?
Thanks TD

What do you mean by "stock", does it have a steel crank, forged pistons, what are the rods, what compression???.. If you don't know any of that you better be careful on how much juice you put to it!..

Before you go putting too much more than 100 HP of N2O in it, you ought to find out a few things. IMO, cast crank & pistons can take a fair bit of HP, the worst thing to them is trying to spin (and move them in case of the pistons) REALLY fast. Consider the linear velocity of a large, heavy piston moving 4" or so, twice, 5,000 times a minuite (or 83 times a seccond) and also the g-load of the 2 stops & starts at each end. I think you could put quite a bit of Nitrous in an 8.5 to 9:1 motor below 5500 RPM on cast parts as long as the motor is in solid shape 100 to 125HP. I've been running 75HP for 27 years in a "stock" 8.5:1 cast-loaded Indmar 454. Just rebuilt her last winter, perfect shape but for worn out factory bearings and a shot Timing chain (nylon-toothed setup).

I just bought the boat so I dont know much about it. From id'ing the block thru numbers I am confident that this is a 4 bolt block. I have been under the impression that 4 bolters all came with a steel crank. What I dont know is how to find out what the compression ratio is. I think there is a way but I dont know what it is. Help??

just because it is a 4 bolt main doesn't mean that it will house a forged crank, i do a lot of factory bbc's and engines that you would expect to have it don't and some that shouldn't do, whatever good that does you. anyway, if you are not sure, limit power levels to 100-125 hp increase, and you could add another plate and some plumbing, a much better way to go then the 'antique' (not trying to piss anyone off!!) tunnel ram is a blower, even if you went with a small one(weiand 177, b&m 250, etc), the power gain over the tunnel ram would be incredible, as well as fuel mileage increase, and driveability are other added plusses, and it is not as hard on the engine as nos
