The affected vehicles include: 1994-2002 model F-150s, 1997-2002 Expeditions, 1998-2002 Navigators and 1994-1996 Broncos equipped with factory-installed speed control
Ford said its inquiry found that brake fluid could leak through the cruise control's deactivation switch into the system's electrical components, leading to potential corrosion. The corrosion could lead to a buildup of electrical current which could cause overheating and a fire.
Dealers will install a fused wiring harness to act as a circuit breaker in the system. The company said the harness would cut off electrical current to the switch if the current increases.

When you drive something as hot as a Ford, things will occasionally catch on fire :) . It happens.

Had a f350 Powerstroke and it kept going through injectors and blowing off the intercooler boot every time I went to pull the boat up a hill. I still own a 95 mustang Cobra, and as far as I'm concerned It will be the last ford I ever own.

The fires are caused by an overheating cruise control sensor in the brake reservoir that has power with the key off. Ford just has to replace the sensor and the fire hazard is gone. Cheaper for Ford to replace the sensors than pay for fire damage on vehicles and houses.

Ford bashers bother me also, especially when chevys are worse. I have one sitting in the driveway that we cannot give away. POS everything went wrong with it at once! 20k on the motor and 3 rod bearings are shot, clutch line is blown off, its overheating like a mother due to who knows what, barely made it home from the river and ONLY cause a FORD towed the boat so the poor chevy didnt have to struggle. Also on the way home saw 3 more new chevys on the side of the road. Yeah, Found On Road Dead? GMC = Got Mechanic Coming.

I wonder how long they actually have known. Probably similar to the tire situation.

I am sure they have known for a while, but they were probably hoping it wouldnt get worse and just be a few incidents. I would do the same if I owned a business, you cant just to conclusions over a few incidents, you have to wait and see if it gets worse, then you have a problem.
Nissan had a problem with VTC assemblies failing in the early 90s, I own a car with the problem still, it doesnt effect the drivability much it just taps like a mother ****er on start up. You know what they did to fix the problem? got rid of the VTC system and ****ed everyone who still owns one. They sell "new spring kits" but they have been known to go bad again as well.

I see how this could happen pictured is my 95 SVO F-150, either by component failure of operator error, the connectors for the cruise control are under the brake master. proper maintance and owner awareness ie (open the hood once and a while) should prevent this from occuring, but just in case I am moving those wires. 10yrs 100kmi and I have only replaced (1) batt and (1) fan clutch under the hood...........yea I am holding on to My well proven and dependable FORD "Chicken Little" ain't scareing me.

You mention an unlikely (yet possible) defect that is being recalled by Ford, but no mention of the TOYOTA recall of 978,000 vehicles for drag links fracturing? I'll take my chances with an engine fire over losing my steering any day. :jawdrop:

I'd rather not have to deal with either. And by the way many people have died from this engine fire deal. They pull in their garage and go to sleep in the house. Couple hours later, car burns house down with them in it.

If you disconnect that connector at the front of the master cylinder it should disable the cruise control and eliminate the chance of fire until you can get it into ford. That's what ford was doing when they didn't have enough parts.

I have a 2002 F-150 and so far 3yrs and 60k miles and it has not burned up. ;) I'll take it in though and have it looked at.
I'm a loyal Ford owner and have owned many. They all have been great vehicles. I choose not to get into the bashing of other brands. I believe Ford , GM, & Dodge all build good vehicles. The argument of who builds a better one is just a waste of time, never ending, and flat out retarded.
