OK here's the deal. I've change out my exhaust manifolds from logs to lightnings on a blown BBC. The boat and motor are from 1986 if that plays into the noise rules. I need to switch out my through transom tips as the current ones are 3.5". New ones need to be 4". The exhaust will be wet and travels about 18" from elbow to transom (powerglide w/speedmaster setup).
The exhaust drumps pretty far underwater and the boat is really quiet at idle. When running it is fairly loud. So my question is - Do I buy new tips w/o mufflers for approx. $120.00, knowing at idle I'll pass the test but may get hassled while running. Or do I kick down $400+ for mufflers and know I'll be fine but will impede performance slightly.
Your tips are appreciated.....
Justin

I kept my original tips on and bought some $80.00 slip-ins at Dana Marine and keep them under my seat. Have'nt been hassled once... knock on wood.

I see more and more fast boats running mufflers. I think it is the way to go.

I ordered a set of Rex mufflers. With the blower sticking out of the hatch its just a matter of time before I'm pulled over for a friendly inspection......
Thanks for the help.
