I still say 1st weekend. One of the days we can watch the 300. I hear that race might not happen anyways?

I just rented a house from Sept 30th - Oct4 on the water just north of the Needles bridge with a private ramp and beach and we will have 5 boats going. Lets set FC4 up for Needles Marina(change of venue) like the v-drive deal they have there. There are cabins as well as camping spots, the water is plenty deep and there are a few fast boats in the Needles area that I know of that will be happy its there.

For anyone who's interested in going.................There are other options for hotels on the Arizona side. Three hotels which are pretty reasonable and fairly comfortable. Best Western is nice, but kinda pricey (IMO). The KOFA is about the same price as Big River Inn. I've actually stayed at the KOFA and Best Western a time or two. Can't vouch for the ones listed after these three though.
Motel 6 Parker - N - 604 S California Ave - (928) 669-2133
Kofa Inn - N - 1700 S California Ave - (928) 669-2101
Best Western - N - 1012 S Geronimo Ave - (928) 669-6060
Here's a list of the rest of them. Not sure how many of them are still in business.
Alewine Motels-Apartments, 424 W Riverside Dr, Parker, AZ 85344, (928-669-2548)
Branson's Motel Marina Rv, 7804 Riverside Dr, Parker, AZ 85344, (928-667-3346)
Budget Inn Motel, 912 W Agency Ave, Parker, AZ 85344, (928-669-2566)
El Rancho Motel, 709 S California Ave, Parker, AZ 85344, (928-669-2231)
Holiday Kasbah Motel, 604 S California Ave, Parker, AZ 85344, (928-669-2133)
J T's On The Keys Resort Motel, 8982 Riverside Dr, Parker, AZ 85344, (928-667-4336)

I think we might as well create a name for all of our events though just for fun. Its not like we are going to make T-shirts,cool cups and key chains, just come up with a funky name, like "The Lumberyard showdown" for example.
Mike, that sucks about the lifter, were there any signs in the valve lash of it going away? Or did it just go? Im constsntly checking my lash (every river trip) now cause Im so paranoid of that happening, they are coming out this winter for inspection. Also, what brand of lifter? there may have been a sign or two that i just didn't recognize. i lashed the valves before CBBB and after a few minutes of running up river the boat started idling weird and at part throttle it felt like it was down a cylinder. Didnt make any full passes that weekend so i couldnt check peak rpm to see if it was down. After that trip i put the new valve springs in place and didnt check the lash before i installed them. Check the old springs and they were fine but never did check the valve lash before i installed the new ones. Also had some pump work done at this time.
lake tested at elsinore and came back with a couple of loose rockers. Figured that since i was thrashing i brain farted and didnt tighten them enough. Motor was down on rpm but i attrbuted it to the pump work. So I Re lashed the valves again and went out labor day weekend. Same deal. running on 7 instead of 8. Re lashed the valves each morning that weekendd and i just wasnt paying attention to the fact that the same rocker was loose each time i checked them. Today i had Brule look at it and he noticed the #6 exhaust valve wasn't opening all the way. pulled the intake off and saw that the roller was gone from the lifter. The pin was still there but the roller was gone and the lifter was wedged onto the cam lobe. Didnt destroy it but there is definately some metal in the oil because when i pulled the distributor out i found some particles on the shaft.

Cyclone,
I'm in the middle of a similar repair. I noticed that the exhaust tone changed the last few times out on the left bank and it turned out that I had about .030 extra clearance on #3 exhaust valve. I took off the rockers and pushrods and was able to fish the pair of roller lifters out the through the head.
The roller was still intact (but ugly) and the needle bearings were eating their way into the axle like last time when I had this problem. These solid roller lifters only last about 120 hrs and then their shot.
A local engine shop had a good used single roller lifter from a small block that I got for free and it exactly replaced the bad one I had so I swapped it, reinstalled it and never had to pull the intake manifold. I'm just looking to finish the season and then have the whole set rebuilt again.
What brought this to my attention was last Saturday after I raced (and won) against a nitrous injected hydro owned and driven by John Haas's son. I lost all oil pressure and had to be towed back to the launch.
I pulled the engine and the pan. It appears the oil pump pickup had broke off the tube some time ago (that explains some things) and the pickup tube had injested a small piece of aluminum from the windage tray mount. That siezed up the pump and broke the pump shaft and boogered up the driveshaft. I'm putting in a new one tonight and will be back on the water this saturday.
I inspected the #1 rod bearing and it appears I caught it before any bearing damage occured.
I'm thinking I'm going to need to inspect things more often with this beast running at this level and with all the hours I put on it.

Cs19
09-15-2005, 07:46 AM
Thats sucks unchained, but catching problems in advance is the key. Good catch there on both the lifter and oil pump pick up.
Gotta stay on top of the lash to check for problems. For the last 13 months Ive been doing the lash after every river trip or race and keeping a log of what I see in the lash.It sounds stupid, but it somes in handy.

i believe mike (roostwear) has explained in the past ( both online and verbally) why he may not put on an "FC4" event. and doesnt want the name being used. from what i gather its all about the fact that there seems to be an element that is attending that believes fights and rowdyness is all part of boating. i would imagine most anyone wouldnt want that to be assosiated with thier group, club, team, or company. if FC or Freeboard challenged gets the reputation of being a bunch of rowdy, drunken, fighting boaters, then roostwear will never get the respect at any park to be able to throw another one. cyclone you should know, you got banned from big river for the rowdyness and loud music. imagine if you had a race team, or a buisness, assosiated with the name cyclone, then someone else used your name and started discracing it. you would be the one to get part of the blame. now im not picking on you mike, im just using you as an example as you are a key focal point to many of these events. a well recognized boat and name.

Maybe because i'm not privy to all the facts, but wasn't the altercation an isolated incident? I wasn't aware that FC was being tarnished by people partying. I heard someone took a swing at Mike but that doesn't mean its going to happen again. Regardless, I understand his frustration.
Like i said, no one is trying to organize any event with that name. But the same group of fun loving boaters that have come to look forward to the gathering at Big River in October is still going to get together whether mike decides to show up, organize an event or whatnot. I think i can speak for everyone when i say we just like to boat and get together with our friends and will do so even if there isn't an "event" going on.

well from what i remember, hallet dave also had an altercation. hence his his new name "bitchslappindave". all that aside though, i think its just the matter of not affiliating anyone to any certian gathering. we all love to go boating with our groups of friends and thats what it should be, a bunch of friends. hope i didnt offend you mike for useing you and your name as an example. i was just trying to get the point across of having a name affiliated to a gathering, and how it can be an issue. no bad insinuations were toward you man.
