Where are the cool spots to do some hiking, caves, and cliff dwellings. I know that it is going to flucuate with the water conditions. We are going to be there for 4 days so we want to stay somewhat close to the marina. Between Wahweep and Dangling Rope.
Thanks for help!!!

If you've never seen it,, a Rainbow Bridge trip is mandatory. It's in Forgotten Canyon, about 8 miles north of Dangling Rope. Reflection Canyon has some really good ruins to see.
Caves come and go with the water levels.. TnB has some great shots of one that we had 9 boats in last may, and in July, it was gone except for the chimney opening at the top of it.
One of the best resources, in my opinion, for finding things to see on the lake is the Stan Jones map and guide. If you want to, PM me and I'll hook you up with one.
Another option is to come up with the rest of us.. We are going to have a fairly decent sized group out on Sept 28-Oct 2nd out enjoying one last fling for the summer...

Where do you get a stan jones map? I'll be there October 6th thru 9th in the Wahweep motel.

You can get them at just about any store, marina or other outlet in Page. Most of these places have a laminated version that is great to keep on the boat. If you want one prior to coming over, I'm sure I could buy one and mail it..

Thanks for the help guys. I am not going to be there for that long and really want to make the most of the trip.
I have seen Rainbow Bridge! I was thinking of trying to find spots where there are some chimey climbs and explore some ruins and caves. I am also a pretty good free diver if you know of any underwater stuff.

If I wanted to do that I could stay here at a local lake, or even in my backyard.
I want to get the full experience of what Powell has to offer. I know that it can not be done in such a short amount of time. But this is a tester trip for some newbies that we are bringing along. If all goes well then we will start to take longer trips with them.

Hikeing the slot canyons is really great, but be careful. Check for thunderstorms within 24 hours before you start. People have been caught in them by flash floods. Hike in a bathing suit, you will have to swim thru pools too. Take something that floats to carry your camera. Wish I could be your guide

Hell, let me know when you are going to be up there. I would love to have a guide, show me all of the cool spots. Maybe we can plan a trip sometime in October.

Padre Bay.....
http://www.mikesnetworking.net/sitebuilder/images/New_Boat_5-648x484.jpg
is the first big bay as you go up the lake, about halfway to Dangling Rope Marina. I think the most important thing is to find a nice, sandy beach. There's a bunch of coves all around the north side of Padre Bay.
When we first get there, we usually just float in the middle of that big beautiful bay, un-hook the boats and Seadoos, and send out scouts to find a good sandy beach, then pull in the houseboats.

Do not get me started. I am having a hard enough time staying in the office. I just want to go start packing the boat.

Anasazi canyon is really cool, it keeps going back and back....each turn it looks like it is going to end, but when you turn, it opens up again......very cool........
I have a pic of the Doghouse cave, we were able to fit our boats in it, but is wasn't as big as last year....

The best houseboats are at www.lakepowell.com we always rent the 59' Discovery. It has a couple of great features on it..IE a freezer on the front deck, a water toy gas pump so you do not need to bring a bunch of gas cans, 2 barbq's, lots of room.....Check it out.

Yes, we went into the cave last year as well, it was a lot bigger, we fit "Titties & Beer" and "Deez Nutz" and our boat inside, no problem. ***boat "lost" those pics, so unless Scream uploads them from his laptop (not likely) you can't really see how big it was.
I believe it's on the way up to Dangling Rope on the right side of the lake.
Anazazi is just above Dangling Rope on the right side, just go explore the coves and you will find one that goes on FOREVER!!!
Have Fun!:D

4 days is not nearly long enough. Its an awesome place, i've seen the lake full and way low. I love the north end the best. Rainbow Bridge is a cool sight to see, so try to make it there if you can. Plan for at least one day to drive around and poke around areas with no real place to go or see. find a canyon that looks good and head back.

Our friends go the 3rd week of June each year on their houseboat, but Lone Rock Beach was like deserted when we drove by to check out the water level on Lone Rock, I like camping there as well.
:D
Hope we can meet up, don't have our plans for next year yet, This October we will be at OP6X

4 Days is definately not enough to see it all,, but it does wet the appetite for more...
I've been boating on the lake since I was a kid and lived here going on 6 years. We spend probably 30+ days a year on the lake and I still have only seen about 40% of it. Lots more exploring to do..
