I spoke to Larry at Motor Magic about this very subject, and he recommends a 496, 10:1 merlin heads, with a JE piston. A single 1000 cfmer makes 650 horse on pump gas. (562)925-9261

MkIV tall deck bowtie block, Dooley pan, 4.5" Scat 4340 crank, Eagle 6.8" rods, 4.560"x1.120" JE flattops, zero deck, fully ported 124cc chamber Dart 360s, ported Dart single plane, 1250 Dominator (96 mains), Comp roller 256/262@.050-.714/.714, Crower rockers, Jomar girdle, MSD dist/box, ARP studs, etc. Also running a big EMI oil cooler and direct flow cooling to keep everything nice and cold. Max hp @5700, max tq @4700 so it really has some midrange punch. It runs much better now that I've had it redone by a good shop. It was ok last year when I threw it together myself but has really stepped up this year after letting the "pros" work their magic on the dyno.

Have you thought of the crate motors available? The summit catalog carries the WP motor that is a 509 w/540 hp, or the Hardcore motors that are bigger and make more power.

I am using a 514 inch Ford Motorsport short block that is internally balanced, Blue Thunder heads / BBC exhaust port, Victor Jr. manifold with dominator carb, and making a little over 700 dyno horsepower at 6,000 rpm and over 700 foot pounds of torque at less than 5,000 rpm on 92 octane gas. This combination held together at 6,000 rpm for over 15 minutes on the dyno.
My experience has shown the stock oiling system on a BBF will need a little work if you plan to run wide open for over 45 seconds... which I do. I use the Ford roller cam bearings, sleeve the lifter bores, use a 10 quart pan and a couple of washers to beef up the spring in the oil pump.
This combination is fairly cheap and reliable.
Please let me know if you want further information.
Good luck in your efforts!
