I just found a deal on a pair of 500 Caddies. Anyone ever tried one in a jet? Before you have a cow, I'm not very serious about this, but I'm just curious.

Those are great motors.
I know that Old Rigger was considering it, but is not done yet. He has a lot of the parts already.
I had one in a Caddy that I drag raced at Sears Point all the way through high school.
I think it is a good idea. Really torquey, and shares the rear bolt pattern with an Olds.
Squirts up!

My boat is a 21 footer. All the caddies ive seen are at least that long so I don't see how a Caddie would fit ??? GRIN

I think Caddy engines have been used with boats before but they were always on the end of a really big chain.

Hey you guys, there was a thread on Azdons V-Drive site a while back about the same topic. There is a website called Cad 500 or something like that and deals with Caddilac big block performance motors. Tons of cool stuff! Headers, cams, full hot rod Caddy motors and the like.

Yeah, I saw that site too. I just like the idea of running something different. I guess the hard part would be exhaust.

I could make flanges for you. Custom headers for a boat can be had for 800 or less.

Cut the flanges off the chevy headers, and weld some caddy flanges on, same port spacing.

Are you talking about the NorthStar engine or the old caddy design?

malcolm,
there's 2 companies that build all kinds of cool stuff for the old 500 caddys. I'll find the links later and post them. Header flandges, intakes, heads, pans, oil pumps, and even wet manifolds for boats. All you really have to do to stick one in a boat is build the front mount. (at least for a jet) Like Froggy said, you can use an olds rear one.
As far as them being to big for a small boat, I don't know what you guys are talking about!!!!
They're almost 100 lbs lighter than a BBC. Gobs of tourque.

Bear, I'm talkin old 500" Caddie.
These are both out of old Eldorados. It would be cool to have something so original, not sure if I want to give up on the Olds yet. I must be crazy, go from the hard to get parts to the have to make everything parts!

What parts would you have to make, 'cept the front mount and water block offs?
By the way, you have to have the nicest looking 18 Spectra on the planet.

I'm just beginning to think about/research the 32 valve system's cost vs. potential.

I'm just thinkin' out loud. The Chevy guys would get a kick out of an Olds guy going to a motor that's really hard to buy parts for. :D

Use to be a guy on the Parker strip years ago that was running a jag V-12 in a flattie. Kind of a turd out of the hole, but ran pretty good once he got her going. Sounded bitchen too.

I have a friend ,John ,running one in a street rod.500/40over...turns 5500rpms and will boil the tires from a dead stop with a rearend ratio of 2:42 / 1...472 is right ,the flanges should swap out..with the right head / block combination it is possible to get like 13 : 1 compression with stock parts ,I am not a Caddy person but John did exactly that when he first built the motor..it was clattering real bad every time you would try to gas it (13/1) on regular gas...after much research figured out comp.ratio... so he swapped out heads to get back to like 10:1....seems like a good swap to a boat ???

I believe Rewarder has the patterns for making headers for the 472/500 in Caddy motor. Call and talk to Jim or Brooke. I think it would be kinda one off and very cool in the right hull.

Now as ya'll have figured by now maybe I'm a little slow. But if you take a motor out of a Eldorado would you have to move the jet or outdrive to the front of the boat too??

Links? I got yer links right here....
Cad Company (http://cad500parts.com/index.htm)
Maximum Torque Specialties (http://500cid.com/mts/info.htm)
AGUS parts for Caddys (http://www.caddy-parts.com/)
I think it would be a riot to have that instead of a BBC or Olds. You can use the front sump pan that some of the engines came with to run in a V-drive, too. Rewarder does the headers for airboats cuz this is a popular setup in them- I got a ride in a 472 powered airboat in Fla a while back- ran a really stout wooden prop and zoomies...earplugs, anyone??
