Just Curious - what are they trying to do with this set up? (Caution Big Pic)

What are they trying to accomplish with this set up? and why did they do it this way? This isn't common, correct?

It's a ski race boat with that drive setup to run on the surface. The blast plate tames the roost so the skier doesn't feel like he's skiing behind a jetboat. It was discussed a couple weeks ago in the sandbar. ;)
