Boy, thats scary!! :frown:
This just happened the other day with a little plane, they used a jeep to drive under it to pull out the gear, but this landing gear is sideways!!!!
They will just Belly land it with foam I bet!!!

Why not land at Edwards? Big runway, sparse population, and enough safety equipment to land a space shuttle.

They reported that the gear won't go up they way it is twisted. 90 degrees for the front wheels.
How do they do the belly land if the wheels stay down?
I would think that with the pressure when they land, try to bring the speed down, but the momentum might just break or snap the front gear off. That would be the best scenario in my mind because if the tiress hook up at any point a pitches the plane to one side would be bad.

Why would you do something like that... What kinda of forward thinking is that...
But they dont have a hospital up there that can handle that type of emergency....

Just saw coverage on CNN and they had a shot of the front wheels. Straight 90 degrees.

They just said that every seat on Jet Blue has it's own TV with 20+ channels with Direct TV. MSNBC is one of those channels so the people could be watching it themselves.
Hopefully this ends good for them.
But damn, individual TV's with more than 20 channels. Time to start flying Jet Blue.

If the plane crashes, and god forbid people are hurt or killed, would it be appropriate for the news to broadcast the landing? Just curious. Sort of like broadcsting a suicide or something similar.

Hell yeah it would be scary. If they didn't turn the system off, I think I would feel better because a lot of people said that this should go OK and pilots train for stuff like this.
I would rather know what is going on in a situation like this rather than let my imagination go wild.

I agree.
I've flown cross country 5 or 6 times and I hate it every time. I know the safer than driving jazz but I never get used to it. You can't just pull over to fix something. I can't read, sleep or pay attention to a movie up there. :yuk:
I'm just a bad flier...........but I guess it's a necessary evil. :D

OMG!
Our thoughts and prayers are with these people. That is the airline Scream and I flew to DC last year, he just returned on that airline Monday. Out of Long Beach. Our oldest daughter just flew this airline company from Long Beach to Washington, last week.
Too close to home. God Bless....

Just know this is not necessarily the airlines fault, they are saying this can happen if the ground crew does not insert a pin properly after it gets pushed back from the gate. Jet blue is an awesome airline with an impeccable record for maintenance. I hope all turns out ok.

No...Im just saying when I was in the industry...the only planes that didnt have the ability to dump were planes that could land with full tanks without risk of damage...I worked on variants of the A300 ....this is an A 320....smaller bird.....maybe it cant dump....in either case they are gonna want to be as light as possible ...

What you're saying kind of makes sense because they originally said he was 25,000 lbs heavy and would burn 5,000 lbs of fuel an hour. It's only been less than 3 hours since takeoff.
We used to see this ALL THE TIME in the military, I'm guessing an easy landing, no problems.
I have seen Eastern planes land with nosegear problems like this more than a few times....sometimes the gear snaps back into line... sometimes the wheels and tires grind off...and sometimes the entire strut snaps off...either way there should be no injuries... he..or she.. can steer with rudder and main brakes....
I bet the nosegear steering bypass pin is the reason for this

Magic34

A UA pilot was just interviewd on MSNBC and he said that the gear is designed to shear off when under too much stress.

My wife & I were watching it on KABC 7. Besides the awesome job of landing the plane, my favorite part was when they made the mistake of putting a knowledgeable, crusty oldschool fighter pilot on the air. The guy goes on air telling them he has no idea why they are hyping this whole thing up, making a huge friggin deal out of what is fairly routine for any commercial pilot. The old guy said many times over and over that this is a no brainer for any experienced pilot, especially a commercial pilot. He told them the plane will land absolutely fine. There will be some sparks from the landing gear, a small fire for a few seconds from the hyduraulic fluid and tires burning, the fire will go out and the plane will come to a stop just like they practice all the time.
Of course, this was exactly the opposite of what the media wanted to hear. A nice safe landing doesn't keep viewers glued to their TV's, so they quickly got the whisked the old dude off the air and began re-hyping the whole thing, gearing up their viewers go gloom & doom.
It was great to see the old vet knew exactly what he was talking about and the friggin media bozos looked like idiots once again. When will they learn.

I caught that too... laughed my ass off at how fast they got the wise ol' guy off the air. He put the producers in a PANIC
