Which OMC outdrive? Is it earlier than 1987? Is it a Cobra?

6 years, no problems. Just can't run huge power thru them. No hydraulics like a merc, uses an electric motor and a gear drive to lift, and mine has an electric motor on the front engine mount for trim. Hard to put anything else in if it breaks without reglassing the transom, unless you go jet with a set back box.
See my post here about GPS'ing the Tahiti for my set-up.

You must be talking about pre-Cobra.

this is a 1996 v8 cobra and the outdrive must be a cobra also i assume.

Good outdrive. You should still have someone that knows what they are doing take a look at it before you buy. Does the boat have a service record? Was it used regularly? Just a few questions that I would ask.

Good unit. Very similar to a Volvo. 1987+ Cobra and King Cobras are good units. I had a 1987 King Cobra behind a BBF running about 350 HP with no issues for about 4 years. And yes, they do have hydraulics (sp). Its just hard to find people that know how to work on them.

Sorry, Should have asked the Cobra vs early model question. Mine is an older 800 series. Cobra is a Volvo/Merc looking variant, can't help you there.
