TEST TO SEE WHAT THE ADVANCE IS SET AT.

See if one of your friends has a timing light with an advance "knob" on it or one of those neat electrical ones that does everything except the dishes. With one of these you can determine initial and advance timing. If you want your dist checked and recurved etc, get out the yellow pages and call some performance shops in your area and they should be able to point you to someone.

If you can't get a hold of a timing light with a "Dial Back" on it, get a $2 timing tape for the damptner, that will tell you what you're timing is doing...

There is a good shop here in town. Besides checking the advance, the distributor machine checks to make sure that the distributor is functioning properly, fairly important if you are running a points type distributor. With an electronic distributor, we can check the basics like freeplay in the bearings, and advance weights and springs, and then just set the engine timing for total advance.

Brendella:
TEST TO SEE WHAT THE ADVANCE IS SET AT. No need to shout. You can check that yourself, a tape on the balancer is a great start, if it is a chevy they are easy to recurve as everything is right on top.

Thats cool, one thing I have found is I get a better result of recurving in the motor, I have had a couple of dist recurved on a machine only to go back and do it myself, I think I might have something to do with load. wink

What is it in?? if a ford they put some big ol springs in the stock stuff that I dont think would hit full advance at 10,000 rpm.

Brendella - I just bought a Pertronix Ignitor II to take the place of my Mallory single point distributor. I also bought a Mallory advance curve kit.
According to the instructions with the curve kit, all Mallory 8 cylinder distributors came preset from the factory with 24 degrees advance. The curve kit also includes a degree key to check your advance. Mine was still at 24 degrees on the nose.
