View Full Version : Carb mounting ( on a tunnel ram) questions

Do I have to have the primaries mounted on the front of my tunnel ram? Can I run them backwards(primaries to the rear)? Will it change the performance of the engine? If you think about it the choke"housing" would restrict the air flow because the air has to travel up then back down into the crab. Could someone shed some light on this for me before I tighten both carbs down.

The first thing I've done with every performance carb I've had is machine the choke horn off.
IIRC carbs that come set up for a T-ram from any reputable source have that done as a standard modification. I guess my answer is beats me, I've never had to deal with it.

Actually might run better. In the 60's Ford had a dual quad option on the 427 and the two 585 cfm Holleys were mounted backwards. This trick worked very well for the street crowd. When Ford mounted the carbs backwards they placed the front of the front carb over the middle of the manifold and increased the engines drivability. This increase in part throttle drivability was of little use to the racers, but was a great help to the street drivers.

396 Why do you want to run them backwards?

The Ford 427 2 x 4s were turned around backwards to make more room for the dist. also. [no sec. metering blocks]

I want to keep my fuel line on the same side :D Does this change performance ty? Come on bro, I know your the carb guru wink I am talking about where the choke housing is. Wouldnt that put some restriction on the air flow? I removed the choke plate but I still have the housing.I am using 2 holley 1850-s carbs.

The question is, “Can I run them backwards (primaries to the rear)?” The answer to that is yes.
“Will it change the performance of the engine?” The answer is no, only if it’s configured inline with the 4150 style fuel bowls.
And lastly, yes the choke horn does impose an imbalance to the air-flow being metered into the venturi region of the carburetor. Either way, whether you’re running them transverse, inline, or backwards ditch those horns on performance motors.
I hope this provided some clearer insight to the subject. wink

The carbs in that picture are 1850's!. If you're going to use vacuum secondaries, make sure you connect the vacuum secondary diaphrams otherwise you'll get eratic secondary opening between the two carbs!... wink

Great advice 058! Running those vacuum canisters in tandem is critical to proper secondary opening. Otherwise your fighting so many other issues...

Nothing tops your "PV" theory 058! It looks like you might have this one locked in....Unless we have a Tonya Hardin incident or something. idea
