A friend of mine has a donoven aluminum 540 built by Eickert. It dynoed at 615 ponies. My question is what carb would be best to run on this engine.I think he's running an 850 holly now and seems to be running out of airflo in the upper rpm's.This engine is bolted to a 25 Eliminator cat.Thanx,Bum

Put a Holley #9375 or an #8896 1050 Dominator on it. 615 hp out of a 540 is kinda weak though.

An 850 is definitly too small, here's a way to claculate CFM size, this will put you in the ballpark......
Engine size (CID) x maximum RPM / 3456 = CFM .. http://www.plauder-smilies.com/coollook.gif

I am running a 540 with a Nickerson 850 Holley, on the dyno it did 680 HP, 680 FT LB.
If I was to try a diffrent carb it would be the Holley 950 HP.
Good luck, Sig

615HP out of an aluminum blocked 540" motor seems very low. Is this motor extremely detuned ? A 4150 flange carburetor set up properly can handle this kind of power very easily, and give you better torque, throttle response, acceloration than a 4500 flange carb. I would not got from a Holley 850 to a Holley 950, the 950 is actually smaller !!
What exactly is the combination ?

I dont know the specifics on his engine other than the Donovin block,Canfeild heads,Calleys crank,Carillo rods,JE forged pistons, all rollerized.I know he was very conservative and went for longevety over mega horsepower. Not what I would do but thats me.I tend to squeez em for every ounce of h.p. they will deliver. He was susposed to go to Nickersons shop today,i'll let you guys know what he had to say.Thanx again,Bum
