thats not as bad as it could have been big props to the pilot.

So why did that happen?
I think thats the one a week or so ago that circled for hours dumping fuel and figuring out what to do since the wheels wouldn't turn the correct direction and the landing gear wouldn't raise after take-off.

I sent your question to a friend who just retired from Northwest Airlines....His answer is below....along with some facts about airline maint. in general.....
I think I heard also that there were service bullitens out from Airbus about the centering cam for the nosewheel steering.....
I heard that mechanics had been working on the airplane. Also that this has happened to other A-320's. Must be something in the rigging. When the gear lifts off, and the strut extends, instead of centering, it must go full throw to the side, and then gets locked in that position.
Have you heard anything from Larry since the NWA mechanics went on strike? Guess he is probably back in ATL picketing again.
Very little heavy maintenance checks being done by airline mechanics anymore. They all get it done where ever they can get it done the cheapest. Some of it is still at contractors in this country, but alot of it out of the country. Especially Central America, places like Costa Rica and El Salavador. They don't have to use licensed mechanics down there, they just have a few licensed mechanics to sign off the paperwork.
I had done some part time maintenance and fueling auditing for TransMeridian Airlines last year. Now TransMeridian shut down friday and is liquidating under chapter 7 bankruptcy. Their headquarters office was in Lithia Springs Georgia.

This is a good opportunity for them to fit some pimpin rims and low profile rubber on there.

JBB -
Thanks for the photos !
I was very interested in this stuff, since my wife and I fly to New York, always on JetBlue, two to four times a year.
The JetBlue Airbus A320, named "Canyon Blue" was the aircraft involved in the LAX landing recently that was so well documented on MSNBC and others.
The pictures above apparently document an earlier similar event, involving the JetBlue Airbus A320 named "Bluebird"
I've never flown "Canyon Blue", but I know for a fact that I've flown "Bluebird" once or twice from Oakland to JFK...
Glad I didn't pick today to give up tequila...

Wonder what hind of grease they use on those bearing.... with all that heat generated from the wheel gringing, I would've thought it to melt away...

So why did that happen?
I've talked to a few Scare Bus pilots who have said the system is designed to do that in case the nose wheel doesn't center after take-off. The software drives the nosewheel to 90* and won't retract the L/G to prevent it from getting jamed in the up positition. :220v:
According to the pilots I've talked to, they practice this in the sim all the time.

Lets see here, tail falls off [ NYC take off] if you operate the rudder to quickly! Nose wheel does'nt aim the right way sometimes! Computer needs rebooting in flight? I fly often fly and Airbus and DC9's scare me, Causes me to drink more then usua! But you only live once MOST people say. l Sam

It's not surprising to see that the bearing buddies popped off.

That's because they had too much grease in them. :)

With some of the stories from a person or two that have flown on Jet Blue it sounds like it could be nerve racking. I think they need to name some of their planes...... BLUE BALLS. :D :D
