View Full Version : Sad news for you Ford lovers today

The last Excursion comes out of the Louisville, Ky., Ford plant today.
At its introduction in 2000, the Sierra Club denounced the goliath ute, dubbing it the Ford Valdez after the Exxon tanker that fouled Alaska's shoreline with millions of gallons of crude oil. Even with its reputation, Ford still sold more than 20,000 Excursions in each year on the market; in the first year the company moved 50,000 of them, 44-gallon gas tank and all. With new chairman Bill Ford at the helm, Ford's about-face into the hybrid market probably will prevent another mammoth Ford SUV from hitting the market - for probably at least 18 months, when a stretched version of the next Expedition is expected to be introduced.

GM will put diesel engines into their new 2007 SUVs.
Hmmmm.....
I spoke to some GM execs that were with Photoglou at the SCOPE run and they spoke the contrary.....
They said that there was "No Market" for the diesel Yukon XL....
Same problem Ford had with the Excursion....No real market.
They said that of all the Yukon XL's sold, only a few percent were 3/4 tons and that if they made a diesel, it would be even less. So much less that it would never pay for the engeneering & tooling......
I hope you are correct.......I really don't want to go back to a pick-up...
and.....a gas Yukon XL is out of the question, I think my mom's old 72' Pinto had more balls!!!!!
Hey !!!!.....They should re-name the Yukon the "Eunuch XL".....
Hehe!!!

That's why Dodge should step up and make one. The new Dodge with a Cummins will get 20mph highway. So no one would buy it?

Maybe they won't but maybe they will....I know a design engineer that works at GM and from we have talked about, I would bet you see the diesel offered in the SUVs in the next couple of years. I wouldn't bet the farm on it, BUT, it seemed to be likely.

Yes I know the Exec's you are speaking of and YES they BOTH said no way but just tonight I opened up Automotive news and there was a small print saying GM is CONSIDERING the diesel in the SUB AND TAHOE but because diesels will soon have to pass the same smog tests as gas motors it would be tough.... The reason they are stating CONSINERING the diesel is they want the market on the ONLY suv to get over 20 MPG Article ended by saying it could happen sometime in the life of the 900 ( newest bodystyle) but would not be more specific...

Whether or not GM will sell the Suburban and Tahoe and Avalanche with diesel engines in them is up to GM. But I am sure that the Duramax and Allison tranny will FIT right into those vehicles. Those vehicles have been designed to fit the diesel and tranny.
The air pollution standards set by the US may keep most/all diesels out of this country.

Yup, I'm going to the MNF game and will be rooting the Steelers on with the other thousands of black-and-gold fans. I'll be glad to buy you a drink!

Consideration needs to be given to GM's troublesome history with diesel power in no commercial vehicles. The disaster of the diesel converted 350 gas engine and the somewhat improved 6.2 still haunt the company.
Any new venture is sure to be met with scrutiny and doubt.
I have never figured out why the company that owns Detroit Diesel / Allison can't get it right in passenger vehicles.
