in the process of rebuilding, i disambled the top end to find the bottom towards the middle of the intake manifold cover in black burns marks. what does this mean?? is this do to the timing or do i have a leak somewhere??

It is the exhaust crossover that can be welded up to eliminate high heat to the manifold. It 's only needed for car applications. Many cases people remove the choke assembly altogether and mill the horn down.

The exhaust crossover is mainly for automotive and stock applications to build heat under the carb improving cold start drivibility etc. Not necessary in most hipo applications although it won't hurt much. Can easily be welded up. The black you see is just oil burnt on the underside from the heat, nothing to worry about.
