What could be causing the overheating on an 89' Johnson 175 outboard? I'm thinking the impellor. Thanks.

What is happening? Alarm going off? Impeller or thermostats or an obstruction.

Do you have a temp gauge or are you taking the alarms word for it. Older OMC's were bad about shorts to the horn. If no gauge check the horns wiring for a short. If so then disregard my opinion.

Thanks, it is a boat that I am thinking about buying. Owner said last time out it was overheating. I was thinking a H2O pump impeller. I can get a good deal on the boat. I just want to make sure it is not going to be a major fix. Thanks for the wisdom.

Most times on an outboard it is the impeller. Take a compression test on it at the very least. The cyls need to be no more than 15 percent of each other.
