I had a recent great experience with Mathis Brothers in Indio...extremely huge place and some awesome deals...may be a little out of the way for you though.

We just refurnished the house with Ashleys. Their prices were really competitive.

Ashleys sells very nice stuff with aVERY nice price tag, its not cheap....

Michaels and sons in the valley saticoy and woodman, Sells Ashely furniture cheaper than ashley and other stuff, very good prices...
