View Full Version : When I was a kid!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning ...
uphill BOTH ways .. through year 'round blizzards. Carrying their younger siblings on their backs ... to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a Straight-A average, despite their full- time, after-school job at the local textile mill .... where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that...
I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!
There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter ...with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!
And talk about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to steal it from your brother or bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! Those were your options!
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high- resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass!
Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! ...
Just like LIFE!
When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!
Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!
You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little bastards!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up ... we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire ...
imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid JiffyPop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot.
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled.
You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

Same here...2 computers though... 2 games systems, swimming pool, 4 quads 2 horses, 3 dogs, 2 mopeds, a pool table, tree house... and they have the nerve to come in and say theier bored...... I then tell them, " You are choosing to be bored"..... and then follow with...."Why don't you weed between all the rose bushes? That'll give you something to do!"...... Amazingly enough... their not bored anymore... and you won't hear them say it for awhile either!! ;)

The things we had that aren't possible today involve freedom. We could ride our bikes miles away to play with friends. Hitchhike places when we were high school and college without fear.
If threatened by a bully you could kick his a-- or get one of your friends to do it and you were safe from having his "posse" come back down on you with vengence, weapons, drive bys, destruction of property, etc.
Parents watched and cheered from the stands at sporting events rather than participate with verbal abuse on officials, coaches, and anyone surpassing their little heroes lack of ability.
To hell with all the electronic gadgets and 4 wheelers, I wouldn't trade my freedoms to roam and do what I pleased just so long as I was home for dinner, got my chores done, and respected all adults I came in contact with during my day.

Use to camp out all night up on the hill, Now known as Anahiem Hills before Thriftys and Vons was there. Only thing we would tell our mom is see ya in the morning.
The Yorbas used to all live up there in the big white house right above Santa Ana Canyon Road, and we would go up there and watch there huge parties.

Anyone here ride dirt bikes in the hills before the LE cracked down in the mid 80's?
I rode CR125's when I was 14 years old in Shadow Hills (between Burbank and Tujunga). We got chased by cop cars...no problem. We got chased by motor cops...no problem. We got chased by Honda XL's...no problem. Then I was coming around the corner with my dad in the truck one day and what did I see strapped to the back of a Sheriff Blazer :supp: A motorcycle trailer with two Sheriff CR250's. Holy crap, they were getting serious. Then they brought in the helicoptors and we were done for. I only ran from a helo once. Didn't work. They didn't do anything except make us walk our bikes home. Which was about a mile. UGGH. That was the end of residential motorcycle riding. Way to take the fun out of life.
Kids nowadays can't have fun outside without wearing a helmet and staying on the sidewalk. No wonder they stay inside and play Xbox.

When I was a kid..... (diatribe snipped)
You referenced "record stores," but failed to mention that the vinyl platters themselves, which had grooves that skipped all the time, not to mention all kinds of surface noise -- not like the pristine-sounding CDs of today. The only good thing was the intricate artwork on a 33 1/3 record...these days, the art on a CD is fairly negligible.
Oh, yeah, and music was a hell of a lot better then.

as much as things have changed.. some things have stayed the same.. most of the kids i run around with still ride bikes everywhere... are gone from 5 am to 11 pm... with girls...staying out of trouble of course!..
but you say how the kids of today have it easy with caller id... la madre always checks messages and whos called when she gets home..(teachers, school, etc..) and now the grades are at the touch of a mouse.. with teachers and their e-mail and EDLINE(grade printouts over the computer.. every student has a file, and the teachers update them regularly..) so yeah, you still have to have your shit together..
and you guys had rights that we dont have.. cuz your parents didnt think about safety first.. and they let you learn stuff the hard way.. sometimes we need that.. i wish they would let us learn for ourselves.. but yeah in the long run.. we have it easier than you do...

On a serious note, you feel guilty like a bad parent for letting your children play outside in the front yard nowadays. It sucks that I feel like I have to stand in the driveway to watch my kid ride his bike with his friends.
Sure. And there are plenty of other ways that it was better in days gone by.
You could call a company on the telephone and not have to talk to a voice-recognition robot.
There was no such thing as "Your call is very important to us."
All gas stations offered full service.
You could enjoy your TV show without the incessant promos, logos and other distracting clutter at the bottom of the screen during your program.
Commericals before a feature film? One that you paid good money to see? People would have rioted in the freakin' streets.
And then there are the things that are gone forever.
Chi-Chi's.
The New York Magazine Competition.
Johnny Carson.
The World Trade Center.
Fanta Wild Cherry soda.
And on and on.....

No kidding. I've spent many an afternoon sitting on a lawn chair watching my neice rider her bike back and forth in front of the house. And then one of the neighbor kids and their parents will come out, and we'll tag team off...
"Hey, you wanna watch the kids for a while???"
