Don't buy Chinese crap. The under $1,000 models are very tall and narrow and flip easily. Flipping these things is the biggest danger, IMHO. Not to mention they are junk and re-sale is a joke.
Go with a wide-stance Suzuki LT50 or Kawi KFX50 (same bike). The re-sale on the Suzuki LTs is so strong that you can keep them for 2-3 years and still only depreciate $300-400. I just bought a 2005 LT50 for $1850 OTD (MSRP is $1,849 +fees) and I know you can probably do better with more shopping. Used LT50s that are 2-3 years old are going for $1,300 to $1,500. These quads are bullet-proof and will run forever.

That is a good price, but be carefull I guarantee you something is bound to break, how available are parts and can you get them. My buddy bought his kids a couple of cheap Autozone motorcycles the first day the kid crashed bent a fork tube guess what the bike is still sitting in the garage 6mo later while he waits for a new fork tube from China. I would purchase a Motorcylcle if anything, they are much safer, my son is 9 but he has been riding since he was 4 we had a deal, learn to ride your bicylce with no training wheels, and actually know how to use your brakes on the bicycle, and I will get you a motorcycle. Best thing I ever did, no kid should be on anything motorized without those two minor skills. I see to many kids who dont have the hand eye coordination to ride a bike but their parents put them on a quad that can really hurt them... If you do ride in the sand a motorcycle will not work for you go for the quad. If you do purchase a name brand these thing just dont lose their resale I paid 1000 dollars for my sons first little suzuki 50 I sold it 2yrs later for 800 dollars. 100 dollars a year is nothing.

I researched for awhile and every dealer talked me out of a quad. They roll and stay with you/on you. I started on a Honda 50 (bike), so will my son. Check into a remote control kill switch and throttle control.

Quads are the only way for kids in the sand. I would HIGHLY suggest, and I mean HIGHLY suggest do NOT buy one of these cheap China quads. Been there - Done that, after three trips of my 4 year old cruising around camp I had the pleasure of putting a whole new top end on the bike. The rear axles are cheap, chain always falls off. They are poorly built. The price is attractive, but you'll spend more in the long run. These China quads may be fine in the dirt, but in the sand, they simply labor too much and they kill themselves. I also have a Suzuzki 80 for my 9 year old, we've had that quad for 5 years and it's gets ridden hard. Starts every time with no drama. Spend a little more, buy a name brand with an extended warranty. You'll thank yourself when you can relax out there rather than have your kids staring at you trying to fix one the those China crap bikes.

My parents bought me the Suzuki LT80 back when I was around 8. I rode that quad all day long EVERY WEEKEND until I was around 10. The thing is great because it has electric start and suspension. My brother had one of the old Honda 70's that had no suspension and we were always fixing the thing. When we finally sold the bike, we sold it to a family friend and his kids rode it for another 5 years. The only thing that we ever did to the bike was put a top end on it after about 8 years. Now our family friend is using it as his camp cruiser. Still running after 18 years.

My friends son has the Polaris also, and this kid beats the crap out of it and it is still ticking. I will vouch for the Polaris after seeing what my friends son does to it.

Instead of a spending $650 on a disposable quad... Consider the LT80. My daughter started in the dunes at the age of 6 on a new LT80, rode it hard (countless hours) for four years without any problems. Sold it last year for $650 less than we paid for it. Never skipped a beat and with paddles and a pipe had no problem duning... yes, DUNING to Olds. You will not see any of the import quads at Olds unless the were brought in the back of a truck.

Don't buy cheap equipment! Your kids safety depends on it. Most of us hot boaters spend thousands, if not hundreds of thousand on our boats. Don't buy based on price. If so, everybody on the forums would own a Bayliner. I had a "economy" quad and it let me down on three different trips to Pismo. On the last trip, Thanksgiving 2002 I could not take any more tears from my son, age 6, so we went into San Luis and bought a new Honda. Has worked perfectly since the pruchase. Safety and dependability should be a perents main concern. We now have five Hondas and love the build quality. Honda's new 90 has and electric start. Resale value is much better on good bikes just like good boats. Good luck on your search.

Stay away from the Korea brands in the long run they are not worth it, two of my friends made that mistake so we got the Yamaha raptor 80 but for ease of use the susuki 80 is better but i wanted my daughter to learn how to shift gears so the Yamaha made more sense.

I hear everyone on the quality brands, but I think that he wants to buy something cheap to even see if they are going to want to do it more than once. If they really like it, I think that after a few trips, new bikes would be purchased.

Makes sense you can always get out of one of the cheap ones on E-bay or a garage sale, especially if it only has a couple of rides on it.

That sounds good but, like I said, you could probably sell the LT for close to what you paid for it. You probably could not give away a $695 quad used. I think you would lose more $$ on the China crap (not to mention supporting a Comunist economy).
One other thing. I didn't notice the age of the kids. My daughter is 5 and is just right for the LT50. She cannot reach the floor boards on the 80. I think she will get a year or two out of the LT50 and then be good to go for a 80 or 90.

Just bumped it for you
Yep, I was the first to suggest a motorcycle w/ training wheels and someone (hocus pocus?) said that training wheels "were bad because it didn't teach the proper way to ride."
Well that's bs. Here's my son on his Yamaha pw50 w/ training wheels at a month over 4 yo (5 weeks ago). The next pic is of today on his new KTM 50 practicing for his first peewee race.
Motorcycles are safer and don't give kids a false sense of security. My .02.

Great pics love to see kids railing with or without training wheels, I wouldnt allow my son to get a motorcycle until he could ride his bicycle without training wheels, also he had to be able to use his brakes on the bicycle, (which he was able to do before the age of 5) before I would purchase the dirt bike, to each his own, I have never put down anyone because they chose to let their kids ride with or without training wheels. Good for you and your son obviously it diddnt hinder him.. Wish him good luck in future racing and riding...

Well, I kind of did the same thing. I told him that I wouldn't remove the motorcycle training wheels until he could ride a bicycle w/o them. That same day, he and I took the bicycle training wheels off, he rode up and down the street unassisted on the second push by me, he bicycled into the garage and said, "Okay dad, now let's take them off the motorcycle". I did and the very next day he was riding a motorcycle w/o training wheels!
Some kids have no fear.
BTW, today he rode on the local mx track (4 stroke nationals track a few weeks ago) and did 4 laps with only 2 falls! He turned 4 in July! He didn't get his skills from me...

To Cool. If me and my son make it to any of the races in Dist. 37 I will be sure to look you guys up, it would be great to hang out at the track with you guys, I know the feeling about the no fear thing, it scares the hell out of me watching him. OOPS diddnt even notice I guess you arent in Dist. 37. Oh well you never know maybe one day at Ponka City or Loretta Lynns if things go well.

Hahaha...as tempting as it is to dream of him racing at LL, etc., I am really just happy he digs it so much. He is showing some really remarkable talent for his age but I want him to dig riding forever...and not get burned out by some crazy, hard driving pit dad.
I agree about being scared watching them. There's a very fine line between being proud of some move they make and "oh my god, this ones gonna hurt!"
Nice chatting w/ you.
