View Full Version : Project Hawaiian

This is my latest project. 75 Hawaiian 18'. Berk 12JC, and will be powered by a 455 Olds. I found the floor to be a "little" soft, when I put my knee through it, lol. New stringers, floor, transom, and bulkhead, and paint, and she should be like new!
I will build a new tandem trailer, rather than try to salvage the current single axle one.

Thanks

Dave, I am glad to see that you are making it happen.
I picked up my SleekCraft from Sleekcrat76 today. The workmanship he put into this boat is outstanding. I almost got to get it wet in the Pax on the way up from VA but I got stuck on I-95 because of an accident and it got too late - 2 bad.

Thanks, BBB. I see the actual properties (location) of the pic are different from the url in the address bar when the pic is my screen. I'll keep that in mind when I post progress pics.
Lynn- glad to hear you are ready to hit the water. Post up a pic. The only ones I have seen are the ones where he had the big grin on his face (Sleekcraft76). I don't know if that is the boat you got.
I will be ordering the tandem axle kit on Monday from my neighbor. I also have to call over to the warehouse (at work) and order up some material to start building my new trailer. I will get them to deliver a couple 20' pieces of 4" channel to my house so I can get started on the trailer. The rest of the material I can throw in the back of my truck and bring home. I have already drawn up a 3D model of the trailer, so I can make some plans and print them out.

Whats wrong with the old trailer?

DelawareDave
10-17-2005, 01:34 PM
The fenders and steps are rusted thru. The front is bent a little. I have to relocate the bunks. I don't think the state of Delaware accepts a bill of sale, as far as I know. And I want a tandem trailer! :)
By the time I do everything I want to the trailer, I might as well fabricate a new one. Tandem axle kit I get for cost- under $300 for everything except tires/wheels. Fenders and wiring I have to buy no matter what. The steel that I actually have to pay for, I get for cost as well. I have the wood for the bunks (free).
I can build it right here in the driveway with free labor- mine!

Yes Markist. I bought Mike's boat. It has some really nice workmanship in it. I love it. I gave up my Hawaaian project boat (now Delaware Dave's project boat) for this turn key deal.

Blown428fe- Looks good.
I ordered my steel yesterday morning, and it was in the driveway when I got home from work. Fast service!
The axle kit was ordered yesterday as well, and will be here today.
I started removing the existing X-members so I can re-use them. I am going to add a fourth x-member. The bottom of the boat looks straight for about 44 inches from the transom, then is straight again, but slightly uphill the rest of the way forward, giving a slight rocker to the bottom. It looks like it is made that way. I am planning on 4 bunks, like on yours, to match the last 44 inches, then put 2 bunks from the rocker forward, but closer together.

yeah Lynn, you got one nice boat there!!!!congrats :rollside:
Dave,Jr Jetter and I think we have the sister boat of yours whats the HIN#
on that thing,so I can see how close they are, they have a really heavy lay-up,ours don't even have a buklhead and I can stand on the bow where the gauges are and it don't even move, and I mean the trailer and all, nice project, will might have it done in the spring ,its gonna be our community boat ,you know, so when we do things to ours will still have a boat to go to the lake on,Good luck and if you need anything give me a shout...

The layup can't be too heavy- 4 of us picked it up off the trailer to set on the dolly I built. I can't look at the HIN til I get home. It does have a bulkhead with an opening so you could put stuff in the bow area. The deck is not attached to it, tho. I will be removing the deck for some wood replacement in the very near future. The trailer has to be done first priority.
You could trade me some 14" tires and wheels for a Jacuzzi pump. I'll even throw in an 18' Sleekcraft to sweeten the deal!

Bro man,
Dave's is a Hawaiian, our's is a Tiki (go directly to jail, do not pass go)................. basically the same with very slight differences (but of course you already know that :D ). Never know, same person probably layed the resin, since the same molds were used !!!!
Dave,
Were any of the seat frames left ? Can you tell if it had cocktail seating (1 bucket seat only) ?

DelawareDave
10-20-2005, 04:17 PM
JJ- No idea on the seating. I have the interior from the SleekCraft. I was going to rebuild that for the Hawaiian.

I made a little more progress today, in spite of the rain. Got the other 2 X-members in. It's not supposed to rain tomorrow, so I will finish the welding on the bottom. Then I can set up the axles so I can weld the spring seats in place. Then it will be time to turn her over.

I'm sure a few people had the same thought, including my wife, lol! But it really was a toss-up- fix the old one, or just build a new one. To fix everything necessary, and make it the way I wanted it, it made more sense to build new. The only thing I had to buy to build new, was the 2 - 20' channels, and the coupler. Everything else I would have had to buy anyway. As far as rebuilding your trailer? It would have to wait til I move to my new house, first of December. I can't deal with a one-car garage, and a psycho neighbor. New house has 2 car garage with heat, and a big enough carport for the boat and trailer to go in. Best of all- no neighbors.

Getting closer now! Steps are on, as well as the bow stop. Lights and safety chains are to be installed this weekend, and hopefully the front bunk brackets too. I want to try and get it inspected next week sometime.

For anyone who has been following this thread, I have fallen down on the job. :rollside: I have pretty much completed the trailer. I don't want to install the rest of the bunk brackets without the engine, and most of the interior installed, or at least set in place. I feel the trailer will flex some once the weight is added, and this could throw off the bunk bracket heights. All the weight is toward the bow without the engine in place.
All the lighting has been installed, as well as the safety chains, and the loops for the rear tiedowns. I need to get a couple more pics at this point.
I am getting ready to move to a larger garage, oops, I mean bigger house, within the next couple of weeks, so I am pretty much putting the boat project on the back burner, for the moment.
