At what point do you start to thinking the motor has alot of hours?? Just looking for some general numbers, and opinions.

When you see something else you like and want to buy. I've heard 700 hours if you keep maintained on a regular basis. Does'nt always go that way though.

Had a friend with a 454 Mag with over 1000 hours and still ran great. I'm sure the 496 HO is just as good if not better. As long as it is stock and maintained I would think you could get that and more.

With the motors in my boat? I would estimate 25 hours is old and means it is ready for rebuild..  I've since been told to service 496 HOs VERY Regular (more so than 454s or 502s).

Maybe that is why Kachina Ken calls them "Shit Boxes"???
Been running great for 11 hours straight this time.. :notam:

Bob Teague feels an estimated 2000 hours is safe.
I would have to agree. Air-cooled opposed motors have "time-between-overhaul" (TBO) figures in the 1700-2500 range. Those motors are not treated near as well as boat motors. They are similar - in that they are under a load all the time. Even at startup! The prop is attached to the crank snout, no clutch. Even on decent, they are still spinning the blades, even close to idle. No closed cooling. If these motors go 2000 hours, there is no reason a 496HO should not do the same or +1000.

Service is the key word, I would change oil every 15 to 20 hours on my old boat with a 454 Mag. Maybe a little over kill but it made me feel good when I was running it at WOT all day long.

I've got 187 hours on my 496HO and no problems at all. And no appreciable oil consumption between 30 hour changes

Hope it will go a little longer than that.
Thanks, If I still have it next summer I’m going to have some spots or cows painted on it. That way it will look like the rest of the Kachinas out there. :shift:

From what I understand is that average marine engines with regular maintenace go about 800-1200 hours. Your results may vari.

Well I know it isn't a 496, but my 16 year old 454mag is still going strong. I have probably put around 500 hours on it, maybe more, in the last 5 years that I have owned it. But I am very anal about servicing it.

"IF" you take care of it, 1500 hours, no problemo.
but if your like us it will be traded in for a new one with 300 hours on it. LOL

Ah ha! You're back.
I was just going over some old threads the other day and saw where your 496 broke.
What ever happened with that?
