After 20 years of boating I finally got towed back to camp. Worse yet, on the last run of the year, prior to winterizing. MSD has let me down. It was a good thing someone was on the lake. There isn't much weekday activity, in October, in Wyoming. Does anyone have a good magneto, or a line for one, for a big block Chevy? Thanks.

Ken, I see them quite often, here as well as other sites, I'll keep my eyes open for you. If you can't find one before the spring thaw, I'll loan you a Don Zig I keep as a spare for the PS boat.................Ray

I have a Don Zig Vertex, with adjustable collar and a good set of Mallory wires that I would sell for $350. Email if you would like to see a photo.

I've got a complete super mag II. But they must be run locked out...only for blown. Have to check and see if it is tall deck base or low deck.

I picked up my Vertex off Racingjunk.com a couple years ago for 300 or so... fresh overhaul and everything.

why is that fiat ?? My very first mag 2 was put in a mild 461 chevy with 10.1 compression and a 305/112 l.c 591 lift cam and squareports -- the boat starts and runs fine for 14 years I have no hesitation and timing is at a conservitive 32 deg ?
I respect your knowledge and i"m just asking why ?? Chris

If advance weights are run in a Supermag they tend to tear the pins out of the mag drive. Mallory makes advance weights but only use them in the little sprint mag. Supermag's are much harder to turn than a sprint mag.
Some guys run Supermags locked out in their unblown motors and get away with it depending on compression and cranking cylinder pressure. But locked ignition tends to kick back on the starter so I always recommend advance weights in an unblown deal.
If you have been running advance weights in a Supermag, you need to take the generator off and look at the pins in the mag drive. Odds are they are torn loose and can break at any time. Just the nature of the beast.
The Supermag generators (top part of the mag) have either a 2 pin drive or a 4 pin drive. But all the bases have a 2 pin drive.
With your mild compression and timing you probably have a locked out mag and have just gotten away with it.

Better check to see if it works, too.

I just gotta say, I love my Supermag 4. It solved the issues the MSD 7 couldn't handle. :D :coffeycup

Mags have threir issues too. Only 20 yrs, and you're dumping the MSD???
Sounds like it gave you pretty good service.

Well I have these pictures and this may help someone on the pins, drive and lockout area. So here goes:

If you look closely at the last pic..you'll see the pins have been welded. They are not welded by Mallory, just peened over.
