In sticking with the common theme of gelcoat splashing lately, lets see some of the copies of your designs.
Our Boat
http://www.jumbocreations.com/lavey1.jpg
And one of 3 others I have seen.
http://www.jumbocreations.com/laveysplash.jpg
I guess because they are both Lavey's it makes it ok, but I have seen other companies with the same scheme I just don't have pics of them. The owner of this boat told us that he saw our boat in ***boat and took the picture to lavey and said I want that. The back of his boat is blue though and ours is purple.

We bought our boat used, so I am not the guilty party, but our boat is an exact copy of another Carrera Party Effect that was bought a year before ours was made. Damn, it's one good looking boat!!!
The only problem is that sometimes people confuse the two, and give us hell for not waving back or acknowledging them, when we weren't even there.

Come on guys give Wes a break.
I'm not sure if he has mentioned it but all Trident Revolutions will have the same gelcoat scheme. But a variety of colors to choose from. And different colors look quite different from each other even though the scheme is the same.
He just wants to ensure that a Trident is the only boat with that scheme. Anything wrong with wanting to protect your artistic creation?

Beer-30
10-21-2005, 07:10 PM
Hey now, I am totally behind Wes and his copyright. No problem here.
I just think there is some comedy in how many similar gels there are. I for one think that it is not all about having a different gel than everone else (obviously), so much as how clean you keep it and how many personal touches you do to it.
Look at Shadow's, for instance. I have not seen another dash-center-speaker-pod like his. Totally original and it makes the boat his own. That's just my take on the whole issue. Life's too short.

I'm not griping on anyone.
I'm just not sure that everyone realizes that all of his boats will have the same gelcoat pattern.
It's not that he is designing all of them individually and will have to monitor every custom gelcoat that comes along to make sure it was not copied. It is a standard scheme that reflects Trident.

Most companies will not do a gel like mine. they say the black falls out too fast. I haven't gotten a new hull yet because I can't get a black one. I would be pissed off if I saw a twin to a boat I designed. I am building a twin to my own boat just to have 2 but that is different 1 for nor cal and one for so cal.

You know??? i could never figure out why the builder would not "go black" if they are that concerned about the integrity of the color, clear before you black it out!!! problem solved! (i understand you would not be able to use any other colors)!

Quality is everywhere with most of the common boat builders. It just depends what quality range you can afford or would like pay for. I have seen some old Lavey's Eliminators down to Bayliners.
Cobra makes an awsome boat. Love the set up them. They are laid out very efficientely as far as cockpit and cabin space. The way the bimini tucks away under the rear hatch is top notch. I was looking at buying a new one also before I decided on buying used. I also spoke to Hernanado and was turned off by his sales spiel on how the boats this and that. I'll tell you like this. I had all the financing squared away to basically buy a boat money over hand and he said he could not discount anything. He said an I quote "his boats are that good, they don't warrant discounts". I call bullshit. Everyone deals. Eliminator, Commander, Ultra was willing to deal. BTW he was the only sales person to bash other boat builders. Everyone I spoke to was a gentleman and professional but he came off with a little hater in him. I'm not the only one who has experienced this with him. With JY Ruiz it makes 3 Cobras that weren't sold within the last year or so. Just my .02

The first one of those was done in 1999 by John at Ultra for Kevin Spaise at the 2000 LA Boat show. He did the same graphic on a big 28 at the same time and then built a bunch. I think the first splash of that came from Sleek, with everyone else right afterwards. That is a Magic/Sleekcraft stock gel design now.

You are right, the quality is there with most builders, not all. I do unerstand the sales pitch of the "we will throw this in for you" But when a product is built, we the consumers know what the $$ is. If give aways are what builders need to do to get their boats sold then we the consumers get what we pay for. I too, love a good deal and want to be taken care of, but you did not have to give me a stereo upgrade to pull the trigger. Now add a $20K motor upgrade and I might be a hypicrite. I've been shopping too, and seen both side of your story. I too am blown away by seeing some of the crap out there and dont understand how a customer is satified. I am just too anal. Thats why opinions are formed and another reaseon why there is a boat out there for everyone, cuz everyone is different.
Quality and value is why I bought mine, as I bonus I have met lots of new friends and get great customer service.

Well at least I can say John West himself designed my graphics. :2purples: :2purples:
It's not that important to me actually. I could care less what the next guy's boat looks like. If it has similar graphics or the same for that matter it just tells me we share great taste. Big F'n deal. Like I said I bought my boat used so graphics are a little of a comprimise as well. Thanks for the research anyway. I didn't think someone would actually have that at hand.

No doubt bro. I really like the Cobras. I'll even admit it was my first choice as far as new. I just couldn't get past the arrogance in the dealings. I was not asking him to upgrade anything. I would have been out the door @ just under 73K. I asked he could do 70K. Commander was willing to do it. I forget what Eliminator said and I didn't get that far with Ultra because the 28 was beyond my reach.
I just saw one this past weekend in Parker and they sit pretty, I still like the way they sit. Like I said it's a beautiful boat.

Everyone deals.
Essex, Hallett and Howard do not deal, the price is the price.

Hey Throttle, I guess Cobra splashed your gel of Ultra, your boat has the same gel as the Ultra Froggy posted a pic of. Your Cobra is just a different color.

Eliminator was using terms like "we can do". That led me to ask the question if the priceing was negotiable. He said yes a little.

Our 2750 was the 3rd out of the mold and we were told the first ro have the "Dirty Duck" scheme. We did not design it, it was on an offshore racer before it was on our boat. Jeff said it was the first but he may have been pulling my leg as he also told me he wasn't going to copy it. I know the one back east is a 29, there is also a 26, I have not seen the Sabre you speak of but I don't doubt it's out there. I believe the sabre came after ours but I could be wrong. I really don't care, They all look great. The only time I have seen the others are at the regatta's so it's really no big deal. Ours is an '02 and they have really moved on since then, I think the last dirty duck was done in early '03.
The little woman just reminded me that the sabre didn't exist when we bought ours. We took a ride in the first Saber at the '02 regatta. Our boat was built in early 02 and the first sabre barely made it out to the '02 regatta in september. But like I said before, it doesn't bother me.
Here's a pic. This was friday of the '02 regatta. They are similar for sure.

I do believe froggy is right. Lets leave it at this, when builders work together they tend to probably take some work to different places with them... This does not explain how commander started using these grafics, but as the pics I posted show, they just have tendencies to splash good grafics. I have been using em on my boats since '02 as well. :rollside:
