View Full Version : Which Blower?

Ok, I am new to the blower world. I need some advice. I currently have a 540 Bow tie tall deck Natrally Asperated. I am thinking about adding a blower. There are several options out there. I am looking for some information on which to go with and why. I would like more power/speed with little hassle. I am being told that I will have to run high octane, 93 or better. How do you all get away with 91? I am told that it will fry the pistons, the first time. This is with only 8 lbs of boost.
All options are open at this time. Thanks for everyone's input.
Cheers,
NorCalCat

I am no expert but what compression are your running?
You will have to run 91 depending on compression ratio and how much boost you run. How much HP are you looking or going for?

Back off timing and keep it around 7 to 8 lbs..Innercooler would also be a good idea.Good fuel is still cheaper than a melted engine.I run 50/50.91 and 110 mixed. My motor is 8:1,34 timing, innercooled and 10lbs. of boost

Well Done

Hey NorCalCat, I am running a 540 with a quad rotor whipple. Naturally aspirated with 7-8#s boost at 7.2 compression and innercooler. Runs great on 93 but we all know the story on that stuff............However, if you run good gas (I mean GOOD GAS) from a reliable supplier, you can get by on 91 without a meltdown. But.....mixing the octane does make sense and give that extra security if you intend to abuse the thing.
Send infomaniac a PM or email him about a whipple setup. He'll give you the skinney.
Well Done

NCC my motor makes between 7-8 lbs on pump gas no problem. timing is set at 34. check your pm,s

I try to explain that to the wife and she doesn't get it.

I am currently running 9.7:1 cpmpression ratio. I am planning on swapping out the pistons to lower the compression. As I mentioned, I do not know much about this. I do NOT wnat to mix my own gas. If I do this it is a MUST that I can run on pump gas.

NCC, I run my blower motor on 91 octane fuel (with an innercooler). I can get up to about 8.5 psi boost with 32-34 degrees timing depending on air conditions. If I want to go over 8.5 psi boost, I will raise the octane level of the fuel. My motor has 8.2-1 compression so I would think that if you brought your compression down to something in that range and added an innercooler with the blower, you ought to be just fine. Also, I would suggest at least a 10-71 blower size for your 540. Good luck, RR

NCC agree with RR above. I stated same to you in PM. you dont need race gas if set up correctly. I have 14-71 innercooled 588 ci 1000 hp and run pump gas 34 timing 7-8 lbs boost. I hit 116 this weekend with labbed prop. yours will see those numbers if comperable, then we talk drive.

blowncarrera & RR,
who would you recomend that I have do the work. Pistons, blower, etc...All this is coming form Force Offshore. So it sounds like I should not take it back to the manufacturer.

I have had great luck with Larry Peto down in Tucson but it's a long drive from this area.

exactly what I was thinking.....what are you up to Erik? Thought you were looking to unload that 29'er for a 32-34? Decided to keep her and get into the "trips" eh??
You're a freaking mad man! Love that boat!

Still not exactly sure. If I do blow it, I think I am going to fresh'n it up to a 565 and add a 14 71. Hoping to get 1100 hp...Taking the boat down to the shop Next weekend, so I better figure it out soon.
But then again, depends on insurance...With out blower my insurance just went down by $2k.

I ran a 598 with a 14.71 and 8.7:1 static with 30 degrees in the timing and 10lbs and can run 128 on 91 octane. Oh I dont have an intercooler either. did I metion You could just buy this instead.lol :hammerhea good luck, and oh yeah you rboat is bitchen looking. I kinda want to see the 32 with twins.

Wait till you see the 29 with twins. Same freeboard as the 32 and same beam as the 32. Simple turn key 540's should push her 125-30'ish...

If you like techincal mumbo jumbo here is the link to BDS's compression ratio versus blower boost and their recommendations for pump gas / good (race) gas.
BDS link (http://www.blowerdriveservice.com/techcharts.php)
Using your example - to run 8lbs of boost you need a static compression ratio of 8:1 or less to run pump gas.

I would recommend a weiand 871 deal with a couple of good blower carbs. The biggest problem you will find is locating these deals as they are becoming more difficult to find... :notam:

Get a Whipple R 980, less HP to turn, much more efficient than any roots.

That would be good if you want to run BAH or BGH :D

I do believe there are few screw chargers in the BGJ ranks not to mention there was 1 running alcohol in RR last race that potentially could run in the BFJ class.
If this guy is looking to put something in his cat, does it really matter what these classes require: BAH, BGH, RR, BGJ, BFJ.

Larry Peto is the Blower man down in Tucson! I dealt with Larry for years in Tucson before moving to Indianapolis. I still buy stuff from him and learning from his extensive no how. Anyway, keep the compression ratio around 8:2 and dont spin the blower too fast. Detonation is a Blower motors worst enemy. I spend 4.80 a gallon for Sunoco Purple 110 octane here and its worth the piece of mind. Blowers Rule!!
