One of my neighbors said a sparrow hawk, and I was pretty sure that they didn't get much bigger than a foot wide.

My first guess was a speckle chested Finster's hawk. But after reviewing the member's hawk pics I'm gonna hafta go with Sparrow hawk. It definitely is not a redtail or Tony Hawk. :)
Just my humble observation. ~ Suey

I love it... ask a question, and get beat to hell with 100 different answers. Could you imagine if on Millionaire they had a lifeline (Instead of ask the audience) ask the HB Forum crowd???? answers ABC and D would be 0, because we have our own language!!!!

I would say that one that allows you to get that close would be your spotted dumb ass Hawk. But then what do I know about Hawks??

LMAO....
This time of year the birds of prey migrate South, some as far as Central America. They fly in groups called "kettles", sometimes 200 birds or more. Dallas is on the migration path, and sometimes I am lucky enuff to see them.
They all spiral around in thermals gaining altitude, then glide South until it's time to gain altitude again. Just an amazing thing to witness.
Lots of Redtails hang out here for the Winter. There's one that lives inside a shopping center sign near my house. Last year I was sitting at the traffic light and she came screaming down out of the sky and nailed a Norweigan rat that was running across the lawn of the bank on the street corner.
I turned and pulled into the parking lot, got out and watched her devour it. She let me get about ten feet away. Damn, it was cool, they are such beautiful birds.

This one took off and grabed a field mouse for lunch right after I took the pic.
