You can also get this type but they don't keep the wind out as well. :)

I built my own many years ago out of 2x2 square steel, not that tough to build (no not the one in the pic). And it bolts together for storage ect.

Why not use a expandable cherry picker or a solid beam/lamanated beam ???

A frame is much more versitile especially in pulling engines out of big (tall) boats. I also use mine when I take a boat off trailer to hold one end up. Cherry pickers have clearance problems with low trailers too.

That is why I use a 4"x10" beam, one extra support and a chain hoist. That is the first mod I do to a garage.

Hey Mike, I knew you were going to say that. how tall did you make it, I was thinking 10 or 12 feet. 8 feet just doesn't seem high enough, also how wide did you make it and did it have wheels. :coffeycup :D v-drive

if you can go at least 10ft high. i made one out of 6x8's for the feet and 6x6's for the post and a steel i-beam for the cross beam. :hammerhea

You can see mine in the corner. I have lifted 4-5 tons with it.

Northern Tool and Equipment has them in their catalog. Differant sizes available. Don't remember the exact price but they seemed resonable.

Mine looks very similar to KF's roughly 12 ft tall. Yes on the wheels too. I built it out of 2x2 square x .125 wall as I remember. The upper braces bolt in and the sides bolt to the top. Flanges welded at those points bolt together. I stacked (2) 2x2's for the center of the top span for additional strength. I don't know how much it will hold but a big block doesn't even phase it as far as sagging.
