I installed a new cam in my gen VI 454, kept the stock lifters and didn't change the cam bearings. I'm wondering if I should do the typical 20 - 30 min at 2000 - 2200 rpm for a roller cam? Any comments, suggestions and/or advice are welcome. Thanks,

its a roller cam, run it. the only thing to break in is the oil temp, when it is to temp run it how ever you want.

I've never "broken-in" a roller camshaft and have had no problems. Most all rollers are billet steel and I don't think it is necessary with a billet camshaft.
Crank it up, warm it up, and let her rip!

No break-in required. Its ready to run.

Kind of a dumb question but on a stock 502 would just changing to a roller cam make a noticable diff in HP? Is it fairly easy to do? Sorry to hijack your thread

If you changed to a roller cam and it had the same specs as the flat tappet cam the roller would make more power.
The only draw back other than the cost is that the needle bearings don't like idle speed. I got about 100 hrs and the whole set had to be rebuilt which cost a hun.

Woodster, your 502 probably already has a hydraulic roller cam in it from the factory. If you do decide to change cams, make sure to verify correct spring pressures for the new cam and install new matching springs if necessary.

I always though, if you put in a new cam, you also put in new lifters. guess I'm wrong.

almost forgot, does it have rec port heads like mine? I would like to go bigger but heard that the rollers might need to be changed if i go to a reduced base circle cam.i know i'll have to change the springs.

From what I understand, the stock lifters are good up to a .550 lift, anything bigger means new rollers at about $500 a set. :( I went to a cam that has a longer duration than stock.

Thats whats nice about roller cams....less friction...no need to worry bout the break in as with hyd or solid cams
