Would the Holley 0-80508S be a decent/acceptable carb on a mild BBC 18' jet. I know of one for sale. Thanks in advance.

The carb size is a 750. The engine is basically stock. Log exhaust, HEI, performer intake, stock JE pump. Has stock quadrajet that is giving me problems.

I just bought the Holley Main Body kit. It converted my 650 4777 to a 750 HP. Came with every thing you need. I have this on a mild BBF.

Should be fine. I have a 700 Holley on a moderate 454 (pulling 350 actual HP now, unlike in her orriginal 330HP advertizing). Same carb been on her since 1978 (has been rebuilt a number of times to clean crud out from lack of sta-bil in old days).

Not to start a Holley vs. Rochester holy war or anything, but a Q-Jet can be made to run real well, especially on a mild motor. I'd find somebody who is a good with a Q-Jet and have them set it up right or rebuild it right. Might save you some money, unless you are getting a good deal on the Holey. I've never had a problem with Holey's either. When I was into cars, I ran quite a few Q-Jets (don't ask me any tech questions, it was my friend that was good with them, not me) and they ran real well and we used them up to about 500HP. When set up right they seemed to idle well, run WOT well and had a lot of jetting flexibility. It's nice to have those tiny little primaries to cruise around on (in a car anyway) and those giant secondaries to run hard with-Aluminum Squirt

Using a boat in warm weather, do you need any type of choke? Take it off and have the horn milled down. Thats what I had done to my 4777 before I changed out the main body to the 750 HP.

My choke is locked open on my 4150, but there is no really good valid reason can think of to remove the horn (except to remove the list ##'s). It's not restricting the carb's breathing at all.
Q-jets do run well, when they work well. it's just that they can be a tuning nightmare to get set up. Holley's are simple to set, simple to adjust, and also run great when they are set right.

While we are on the subject, what are you guys thoughts on vacuum vs. mechanical secondaries on a boat.

mechanical, the little bar is so simple and trouble free.

I agree, mechanical, but mostly for all-out performance. You can be assured the seccondaries open all the way if your foot is on the stop (or the fibreglass stop) :D
I think vac seccondaries might give better mileage overall IN A SPREAD-BORE configuration, I am not so sure in a square-bore setup. As long as you know what RPM your seccondaries begin to open, you can keep your foot out of them unless you want to be there.
