I am aware of two incidents where the pump broke just below where it bolts on to the block. Both cases were on externally balanced engines and when they were internally balanced the problems stopped.

What difference does it make if the motor is internally or externally balanced. My motorruns very smooth this being the only problem with it. Ford 460 that has been bored and strok to a 557 at around 750 hp

I just tore down a 427 from a Howard runner. The number one rod bearing spun and the others were on their way. I either abused it by starting it and instantly hauling ass or maybe my oil pan wasn't large enough like 460rogers. Any thoughts about the minimum size of an oil pan for 7,000 rpm operation with high volume pumps? Snowboat.
