I run a K&N.

I'd recommend K&N, Wix, or Baldwin. I would not run a Fram. Just my preference.

I run K&N most of the time and have run Baldwin but not many places carry them around here that I know of. But in a pinch I will run the Fram HP series, they are not that bad in a pinch.

Some guy named Rexone has the Baldwin filters. That's what I always ran on my turbo race engine. They have been a high performance choice for years. I first was around them in the late 70's.

Back in the day I ran nothing but Fram but now it's junk, I use Wix now and for those that don't know, Napa filters are Wix!..

Tried a Fram HP, Dam thing would not build oil pressure!
I am sworn off of Fram, I run nothing but Baldwin Filters.

I managed to find a HP 4 locally so I will give it a shot and see how the pump likes it. I guess I will just have to give the others a shot when Spring makes it back around. Thanks for chiming in everyone. :rollside:

Not one person recommends Fram... and 3 recommended against it.

With all due respect JMC why did you even ask for recommendation?

Is HP4 the giant race filter?

Rexone

No that's the HP6.
All the above manufacturers with the exception of perhaps Baldwin also manufacture a cross to that as well.

Must not be many people run the HP6 2 qt filter. Never here much talk about it.

Rexone

you have to run it remotely or with a special adapter so most don't want to deal with it. Most engines (recreational) don't probably really need it anyway if the have a good std size filter.

At the time (when I made the post) I didnt know what should go on it. Its tough to find Merc perf. parts around here or I would have gone back with the same filter. Since then I have managed to get in touch with the man that built my engine. He said he puts the HP 4 on all his engines. I could have bought the K&N but I just went on the builders word. Have you had a bad experience with the Fram racing filters?

Many have had low pressure / blockage issues with them. I've never run Fram HP's personally (always have run Baldwin or KN) but plenty of folks have reported problems, not only on this forum but others like Offshore Only as well. I'm not much of a gambler in Vegas either. Do a search on oil filters and you will find the threads.
Here's a link (http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html) to a study a guy did on oil filters too. The same link is posted in the tech links at the top of Gear Heads.
To me an expensive hi perf engine is just not worth risking for the price of a $10 oil filter that is of questionable quality.

Watched a dead drag motor being tore down. Snapped a rod and bearings starting to crawl. Noticed the fella had mounted a ph-13 fram (bbc) oil filter. Two things-- In my opinion---This is an automotive filter-not made for these high pressures with no by-pass for blockage and the structural integrity of the outside housing is less. I've seen a filter such as this actually distorted. I'm with you Rex, $10.00 is cheap!....Steve

I agree! I will be swapping the HP for a K&N. Thanks for all the info guys.
