Here is the start of our build process. This is the design we have chosen and it goes in the mold on November 17, 2005. The colors will obviously be brighter and more exciting than the digital picture of the sketch but this is the best I can do right now. Nick

OH NO Rick, we are done having kids. The stuff we did just made what was there more useable and we did away with some of the stuff we would not use. As for power we got the 496HO/Bravo 1.

I know I said no more kids last time Tony, but this time I went and took care of the problem. I wouldn't change anything about having the latest baby, he is here for a reason. And that reason is to prevent any sleep in our house at night.

That is going to look fantastic. Have they done any tests with stock power? I am anxious to see the mid-range numbers, sounds like you will be doing lots of family towing/tubing etc. What at great boat for a family. Nick,
You are going to love that boat. I feel fortunate to have 5-6 hours of both riding and driving in one, and it was a real joy in every way. They are just so damn smooth, and you dont hear any rattles or squeaks, its solid. After spending so much time in the 1st one with that TPI 700 in it, I seriously considered getting one, seriously. But we are just too attached to our Bullet to let it go. I am really happy for you and your family, you and your wife really made a good choice.

Congrats on the Sportdeck! It's gonna be beautiful! Talked to Roln20's. We're gonna have to do something special for that motor. Here's some food for thought. Anything is possible:

WOW, that top cover is awesome. I emailed Patrick and talked to him about it. I was just thinking polished but those graphics are insane. Give me some ideas. All of our hardware is pewter or satin. There are no Howard logos on anything but the side of the boat and our interior is going to be pure white. The red on our boat is almost identical to the red on the bottom cover and it has fades like the cover does. I think one of the covers would really look great in the engine compartment. Let me know when you want to make it happen. Nick

Hey Tom or Patrick, do you guys have the non rolled custom cover that you made to fit on my boat? I heard rumors, but I have been out of comission. If you have it, could you PM me pictures, and I will arrange getting it from you. I will be in Havasu for the Christmas Parade in a couple of weeks. First time in a real long time.

Nick is the bottom close to the other deck boats?

SDLifesaver
11-21-2005, 07:55 PM
The bottoms are all real close. I believe they all (Conquest, Eliminator, Howard) copied the Talon many years ago. The Howard bottom is the same as their 26' Cat which is proven with any motor package. Mike is claiming low 70's with an HO and upper 70's with a 525. The first Howard Deckboat with stock power is going to be done soon so there will be more info known when that boat is finished.

Not to take away from your sportdeck thread Nick, but I just saw the Howard site for the first time too. That is very cool how the pics change without touching anything. It gives you a moment to sit back with a cold beverage and enjoy the show. Damnet though, my wife saw that deckboat again and loved it, especially that damn cool little table in the back seat. I have to keep her off of that site! I also saw a couple other familiar boats.............nice touch! Nick if I see you at the lake with your family, and my wife is with me..........stay away.......far away, I dont want her to see how much fun you guys are having in that sportdeck!

Stopped by Howard the other day. The parking lot was full, no place to park. Two Sportdeck sales in progress when I walked in. Nick, I think you got yours just in time, as it appears people are also stepping up for new Sportdecks in 06. They have a very cool white and gray one. It is very wild for Howard, it does not have the "classic" design. They have really changed with the times over there. Thats good to see. I hope my all orange boat doesnt "date" itself!

SDLifesaver
12-05-2005, 08:41 PM
I was talking to Mike the other day and they also had 2 customers buying Sportdecks that day too. I think your right and the timing was perfect. I am thinking the boat should get popped out in the next week or so. It has been in 3 weeks on Thursday so I think it should be about done. Besides if the orders are coming in that fast they are going to need that mold soon. If you are still off work I will PM you the day we pop it and come over and give me your opinions and maybe some ideas. Thanks, Nick

Anytime Gary, the last time we were in a boat that fast my wifes top blew OFF at 96mph so at 110, theres no telling what could happen. It is going to be such a great summer! I was hoping to see you yesterday when we were up there. My dad loves your boat. He's a race car guy so big HP engines catch his eye. We are happy we chose Howard again too. Mike and Gene have been great to us and I am really glad we continued our boating experience with Howard. We made some good progress yesterday and did some stuff Mike has yet to do on any boat so far. I will keep posting pics as we get more progress. Thanks for the comments Gary.

I have a question about the hull graphics on your new boat. Are the graphics that you have on this boat a standard design or are they custom? If they are standard can you change the graphics to something else if you choose?
Great looking boat. I' am sure you will love it...
Thanks, Steve

SDLifesaver
12-15-2005, 07:00 AM
The graphics are custom. We followed the leader on a portion of our graphics but did subtle changes as not to blatently copy anyone. It seems the first 6 to 8 boats look similar in many ways but you as a buyer can choose anything as far as design goes. This is our second custom boat and color is by far the hardest thing to do. I think it's harder than making the payment. Thanks for the comments.

The Howard is taller than the Conquest and has one more seat on the rear bench. There is more storage in the front sponsons in the Howard and the front doors make all the difference in the world blocking the wind. If you have ever driven in a deck boat you know how windy it gets up the center. Both are great boats but take a ride in both before you make a final decision. Good luck.

Those are great. Alot has happened in 2 days. Kind of cool to see it come together. I can't wait for interior and guages. The only choice we have left is trailer color. Any ideas? It is a triple with chrome fenders and swing tongue. Ellis of course. They don't do any metalic so we had to change our boat colors because I really wanted a silver trailer. Back to the drawing board. Our Excursion is white and my truck is white too. We were thinking a dark color like the tribal design but maybe white.

Gary Taylor will suggest black for the trailer. I'd consider Red or Gray if I had your color scheme. We did blue for ours as our primary color was blue. Black is a little dark but Gary's reasoning is sound.

SDLifesaver
12-17-2005, 06:39 AM
What was his reasoning? Nothing on our boat is black but the drive. It might look good, you never know. Our last trailer was red and we had no problems. It was a little hard to color match for chip repairs but other than that it was nice. Thanks for the .02

My 2 cents is to go with the red color on the boat. I think most manufactures use an undercoat that is dark for rust prevention. When the trailer gets chips in it from the road a dark color will not show hardly at all whereas white it sticks out like a sore thumb. Not to mention with chrome fenders the red will look sweet. Are the fenders chrome or polished stainless?

Beer-30
12-17-2005, 10:01 AM
Well, I am partial to red. One of the main selling points (when I bought it) was the trailer. I think the boat should look just as good on the trailer as it does on the water - and the trailer should look just as good with the boat off of it as it does on.
Red is kinda the happy medium to me. It shows shine and depth, but not as hot or oxidation-prone as black. A little more to maintain than white, but shows shine and depth. All-red is too much (did I really just say that?), but with the chrome or stainless fenders and chrome alloys, it really breaks it up nice. This trailer is exactly how I would have done one if I bought new. It was bonus miles, since I liked the boat so much - I would have bought it regardless of the trailer.

I forgot to mention or recommend that when you get your trailer, go for the high profile tire over the bling. My boat weights about 6,500 and I climbed a curb at 3 mph and had to replace it. The sad part was, it was brand spanking new.
email the pic to me and I will post it for you.

I used to paint each chip with Testers Model paint and a fine point paint brush. When we stopped towing our boat from anywhere but the havasu house to the ramp and back we stopped having chips. We may do red again or charcoal grey. Thanks, NJ

No way,
I saw five other boats over at Howard called "Red Barron" too. I guess they liked the name so much, they wanted to call theirs the same thing, and I thought Nick was going to call his Red Barron also, so that would be six!

A side note: It is so interesting how these posts wander all over the place with the different personalities and different perceptions of what is being said, IMO: You really have to look at these forums as entertainment, and education for some. Like this post for instance, I am being educated by Nick on how a Howard Sportdeck is built, and how happy he and his family are. I think thats cool. That is my perception(if anyone cares :rollside: ). Nick I saw your boat yesterday when I dropped off the "other" 900 and it looks really nice in person. Good for you the boat being in the mold for a month. That is the way it should be. 3-4 weeks IN THE MOLD cure time. It took 4 months for my first Cole to be built, one of which was curing in the mold. It cracks me up that some builders finish a boat in that time (one month), start to finish.
That blue deck at the show was just plain beautiful. Howard (Mike) does a great job. If I hadn't bought into an airplane this winter mine would be being built now also, and Gary would be building the motor. Maybe next year.

A 900 efi would be an awesome combination in one of these deckboats. The Sportdeck could totally handle it. 900's seem to be the flavor for 2006. Everyone wants a Whipple motor it seems. They do really work well. By the end of this year, there will be Whipple motors all over the place, and hopefully a few in these Sportdecks.
Your boat is looking really good. I can only imagine how ready you are for Summer to get here. See you out there.

Nick,
The red gel is very close to our transparent red powder coat. Just prior to trading in my 25 Bullet, I swaped out a new transparent blue powder coated Classic 2 cover for a polished Classic and liked it way better. The Classic 2 has 3.5 dia. holes to access the fluid fill ports so you never have to take the cover off for frequent maintenance. I'll post a pic of a red one shortly. These covers have two coats of powder coating. The first coat is platinum followed by transparent red which yields a very cool, deep 3d look. The powder coated ones never require repolishing and are very easy to take care of.
Your boat looks awesome!!!!

SDLifesaver
02-27-2006, 01:46 PM

OK, you guys don't have to come then. We had an adult trip last year that got very interesting when a bottle of whipped cream got introduced. We were anchored off in Steamboat kinda in the middle and many boats started looking in our direction once the festivities began. It was a really good time and no one to my knowledge got offended. In fact, a few people the next day were like "Was that you guys yesterday" and we were like maybe, "Why" and they replied, "That looked like alot of fun." Enough of that talk. Our boat is making progress every day and I should have some more pictures by the end of the week. Nick

JR, good to hear from you. I knew as soon as you rode in the deck boat you would like it. At the boat show you can probably understand why I was so passionate about the ride to everyone we talked to.
