That's what I turn if I put the proper rev-limit pill in. I just keep it around 6K for longevity purposes... wink

That is unreal!! I wish they had sound with that article...I would love to hear the sound of a engine turning 19,000 rpm's!!!

Close your eyes, and imagine yourself at a racetrack... Monza for example and careening around the 8th turn is a BMW F1 at full throttle! The sound is like a chorus of expensive, irreplaceable angels about to explode...
Does that help? :D

Pretty cool huh?
We currently turn the Toyota V8's to 17k. This was unthinkable just a few years ago but with advancements in materials and research into camshaft design we do this with conventional valve springs.
The F1 engines use high pressure, low volume pneumatic devices to control valve closing hence the ability to run higher RPM.
We have had over-revs into the 20k range (down-shifting) and kept running!

Man...I think a 10 cylinder 19,000RPM blast would bring tears to my eyes...
Let's see if my math is straight...19,000 RPMs, or almost 16 ignitions per cylinder per second...
Burnibite...ever want to drop one of those in your boat for a day?

Burnibite...ever want to drop one of those in your boat for a day?In theory it would be great but these things are way too impractical, the initial start procedure takes about 30 minutes and there is no way you can run them if the oil temp is outside very narrow parameters, it would probabaly blow up in the idle zone.
I could see myself being towed in a whole lot, on the other hand, things might not be that different then wink

Those are low revs for my boat :p [R/C that is] I stick with max 6000 for a real one though :D .

HH are you talking about a John Deere? :D
My math says,
19,000 rpm divided by 60 seconds = 316 revolutions per second.
Divided by 2 because each cylinder fires every other revolution = 158 ignition firing per cylinder per second .

MarkWell...I knew I was a decimal place off...but thanks for the correction...

My 540 Arias engine,
6,000 rpm
Each pistons goes up and down 100 times per second
In each cylinder the valves open and close 50 times a second and the plug fires 50 times a second.
Ignition has to fire 200 times a second to fire 4 cylinders for each revolution of the crank.
I guess I'm really asking a lot from the coil. Not much time to build up a spark.

I turn my 496 ci. around 6500 rpm. with a "B" impellor. We'll see how long it lasts. wink

This BMW (http://www.f1racing.net/news.php?ID=50569) turns a few...24,000 rpm.Lets see if I can remember my high school math...the largest turbine is about 13" diameter...@ 24k, that should be 912,000" per minute.
Lets see...that should be about 15,200" per second...which is about 1267' per second.
I think that comes to about 863mph!
Wow...never thought about it that way... :)
