What The Hell Is This Called

I was wondering what the thing behind the aluminum waterpump plate cover is called were the water enters the block and the dip stick travels through. it is were a water pump is on a car motor. I think this is my water leak problem, it looks nasty on the inside.

A timing chain cover? What kinda engine do you have. I have a 460 Ford and was getting oil leaking down the dipstick through there so I brushed all the funk out and put some devcon aluminum putty around the base of the dip flange to prevent any more leakage. It looked like I had some form of sea creature growing in there. And it dug lil pits in my water block off plate.

Its not all that uncommon for the timing cover to corrode to the point it needs replacement to avoid leakage too. :)
