I dropped my heads off this morning and the machinist spotted a crack between two of the valves on the number 1 piston. I need new heads. Anyone have anything laying around that they would like to cut me a deal on?

Justin, what heads were you putting on? Did you do any work to them? It's the little things that really make the package come together! Anyone can slam in a cam & poke some new pistons in but all those time consumptive little tasks that are really thankless & no one ever really sees but you & a few who saw that labor get a real taste of what it took to make it right. In the end if you did all those little things you will know & can feel in the seat of your pants the difference all the time to do those little things did & give you the confidence to really nail it without the fear of grenading!

Charlie,
I completely agree. I was going to put in the 990s but they had a crack, so I'm going to look for some new ones (or new to me). I am basically going to redo whatever I get and make sure everything is perfectly seated, springs pressure is perfect etc... I am taking my time with this motor. It will be a runner when I'm done....

Call the Highway 67 Truck Dismantler in Santee. He is local to me and has been there before on cracked 460 heads. They have everything from Dana 60 spindles to 6.9L Diesel heads. So I can almost bet he has what you're looking for.
Matter of fact I pulled the 460 heads off myself back when I needed them on my last boat.
I don't have the number so call 411.

Justin if you can, gasket match the heads & pocket port & polish. I just spent about 40 hours on mine & brought them to the machine shop & even they said WOW, beautiful work. No one else is likely to ever see what was done, BUT I will know & it will help flow the air & thats what it's all about! The better the air flows the more power you make!
Spend a little extra time prepping the heads before you drop them off wink

Go pick up your heads and go find yourself a good shop that knows high end machining.
When I had mine cleaned and mag'd they found a crack similar to the one you have in one of my heads. Quoted me $125 to repair it and this is a shop I didn't really trust doing that kind of work anyway so I called a shop 70 miles away that staffed by a bunch of drag racers.
Long story short, $46, 5 pins and a valve seat later no more crack, and they guarenteed their work in writing to me.

Motor machine and supply down town can either fix them or send them out if you heli arc weld they can be welded with silicon bronze welded. Carlson&Bulloy down town could weld them for you. they can weld any thing.then re machine valve seats, clean up surface I've fixed many iron hemi heads that way. :p :p :D :D
Not sure of spelling grew up there started racing when I was young down there.
