does any one know how to convert GM's crate 502 auto engine to a marine engine? if possible? at $7500 that is a lot cheaper than a merc motor The Rat With 502 Horsepower and 567 Ft.Lbs of Torque!
The king of all big block crate engines is the ZZ 502/502, with torque and horsepower that will have you grinning and your competition wondering what hit them. This is as close as you will come to a custom built 502 at crate engine prices. Additionally, this engine is full of heavy duty parts, to ensure that it will be making awesome power for a long, long time. With its forged aluminum pistons, forged shot peened steel connecting rods w/ 7/16'' bolts, forged steel crankshaft, four bolt main block, stainless steel valves, 6 quart oil pan, windage tray, roller camshaft and big valve aluminum heads the ZZ 502/502 seems more like a custom race engine than a crate engine.
502 HP @ 5200 RPM, 567 FT.LBS. of Torque @ 4200 RPM (Max. Recommended RPM: 5800)
9.6:1 Compression Ratio
Cast Iron 4-Bolt Main Block
1053 Forged Steel Crankshaft
Forged Aluminum Pistons
4340 Forged Steel Shot Peened Connecting Rods w/ 7/16'' Bolts

Aluminum Dual Plane Intake Manifold
850 CFM Holley Carburetor
HEI Distributor and Spark Plug Wires
8'' High-RPM Torsional Damper

I bought a Gen VI ZZ502/502 Dec of ’99. I just completed my 6th season of use in my jet boat with no internal problems at all with this engine. I bought the base engine and had a bit more port work done on the heads. I switched to Inconal exhaust valves and used the stainless intake valves that came with the engine. The head gaskets that come with this engine are stamped “For Marine Use” go figure huh? I left the short block alone as it came except for switching to a Melling’s high volume oil pump, a ARP oil pump drive and a Milodon 10-quart-oil pan. I use a Mallory 140 gph marine electric fuel pump to feed a marine 850 holley double pumper with mechanical sec with the regulator set at 7 ½ lbs sitting on a port matched Victor Jr intake. Exhaust is 4 inch Gil. I also use a marine alternator, starter, flame arrestor and distributor. Now keep in mined that “marine engines” like to be clearanced a bit more on the bearings due to the cooler running temps then what you see in a automotive application. Would I consider another one? You bet !!

Water reversion may be a problem depending on your set up with the stock camshaft... And, I'd definitely switch out the exhaust valves. I dropped an exhaust valve...only had around 60 hours on it...

The OTHER guy's "bad boy" motors only wish they were as bad as the GM 572 is (not to belittle the 502). :220v:

Check out the small block 454 horsepower......... 610 hp at 6,400 rpm and 584 lb-ft at 4,500--that's 100 more horsepower and the same torque as a 502 Chevy!

Was or is there a problem with the lifter bores not in line or somthing to that efect. Not sure if it was the 620 or 720 just checking because a friend is looking into doing one of these up
Hadn't heard anything like that. I saw the dyno test on a 720 and the lifters were workin' just fine.
