View Full Version : Baby B-Boat lurking in So-Cal

Here's a few Pics of Dick VanBeenan's Bezer coming together. Some of you Northwest Nosty guys may remember the boat. It was "Burnt Orange" with brown trim and was driven by Mr. Nordling in the Nostalgia class up there. Was told he won the class with it one year. If you guys have any pictures of it, throw'em up here, as we have none of the boat running or with the motor in it.
Boat has been re-painted and reflowed. Pulled all the rigging out and started over. New motor will be a dual carbed 496.

While the boat is not quite as light as SSMike's "Cherokee Maiden", the bottom down the center is only about a 1/4" thick where the fins drop through, hence the brace tied into them should help stregthen things a bit. We'll build another brace to tie into the front motorplate and shaftlog as well.

Note reworked over-ride handle...like to keep that big handle low in the boat, so it won't catch your leg if you get tossed out, also think it looks a little better.

Looks real nice Dave.
When I took my revenge apart, The highest concentration of stress cracks were around & in front of the shaftlog.. My floor in the center was about 3/8".
I ran a layer of baltek right down the center of the boat. Baltek is a spongey fiber material, it seemed to work like a honeycomb & create a space. So far it has worked well.
Unfortunatly this was after my first failure while re-doing the floor. I was not in mood for taking pictures. :)

PS...Mike, the old Rayson is looking good. Thru-hull exhausts are completely done, intake and carbs are on, shifter done, battery box done except for top.
Making a list for SuperDave this week to order the bling-bling fittings...Where's the scoop!!!

Got an e-mail from Marc today who bought the boat in '85. Everyone has said she ran real hard back in the day. Gotta love the classic early 80's install, would've like to have had the holesaw concession back then!

Strut support will be pretty well the same just didn't drill the holes yet. I used a ball end mill around the inside though, figured it would add to strenght!..

Dave, Van Beenan, and Smoooth. I told you last night that the boat was Prime, Grade A. Choice and double cool. But it seems Dave that you need a little more room for some of these guys on this board to Schwing!!! I think there are some guys that may be in Love with you. My God son, not since Billy B's last creation have these apes gone so crazy. You have really come into your own. I havent seen this kinda response since Jetboatguru kept one right side up for the weekend. This is unreal. You are the MAN....You could also take this as jealousy. I guess I just need someone to tell me they Love me. I can't even get Billy to return my phone calls anymore. I guess I'm just a little down right now.......RCL magoo

As thin as that bottom is(less than 1/4" down the middle in the fin/shaftlog area) it's gonna need all the support it can get with 850+ horses between the stringers. I've never done it before, but, Dos, you have inspired me  ...I'll put some of that stuff on the scale this weekend and throw some numbers up...might be interesting...

Next step is to detail the parts and send them out for polishing, anodizing and chrome.
http://www.hotboatpics.com/pics/data/500/5187bz13.jpg
Took the time to weigh every part that goes in the boat, except the strut, fins and shaft log...total weight, less those parts...287.75lbs! Couple of interesting numbers...
V-drive with mounts...53lbs
motor plates...11.5
transom bar and pillow blocks...10lbs
3/16ths cav plates with pads...21lbs
prop shaft...15lbs
10 1/2 gal tank...20lbs
And if you think those transom to kickboard aluminum encased stringers are really trick...total weight...52.5lbs!
To answer the question though...Should be in the water first part of April.

PS...Stab N' Steer, Here's a shot of John Canfield's Wickens that he may not have. Dick "Smoooth" Waldrip down the front chute at "The Beach" in 1967. Boat was known as ABBA-GABBA back then and had a Patterson bottom on it. Dick has already sent some shots to John a year or so ago. We offered to buy the boat back from him, but, no go!  Hope he keeps us in mind the day he decides to part with her!! Also, John was supposed to send me some shots of my old 2.5 litre cabover hydroplane from 1984 taken at Bakersfield. If you remember...ask him about them...those were some fun times! Thanks

Thanks Dave!
Cool shot! Check out the 6 deuces! Do you know who the rider was? The boat is now in my shop undergoing an "upgrade" to race again this season. The 'ol girl is 50 years young this year, built in 1956! She is now the 99-P, "Black-n-Blue" (for the last 25 years or so.) The next oldest boat still competing and the boat to beat is the P-74, also a Wickens, but it's much newer, a 1967 model...
John "willed" me the boat, so it won't be for sale. I was hoping to have her ready for Bakersfield but that's not going to happen. After we race her a few more years I am going to completely restore her and take her to events and maybe race in a nostalgia class occasionally...
I will remind John about the pictures... Here's a shot of John and Courtney racing at Pleasanton a few years ago.

I don't know how you clowns get anything done. Let me let you folks in on a little secret. Sammons drinks like a fricken FISH. The only salvation in this trio of misfits is Dick "smooooth" Waldrip. I think he might be Mormon. He doesnt drink. He stays and works while Sammons is entertaining all the beer drinking slobs between Dana Pointe and Tijuana. Everytime I call Sammons, whether it be 1:00 in the afternoon and 11:00 pm he is talking like Foster Brooks and Dean Martin. Van Beenan??? Now heres a real beauty. He starts drinking at 10 in the morning. Do NOT and I repeat, DO NOT invite this guy to any Saturday afternoon BBQ's. Or if you do, make sure and don't leave the cheese dip out. He will fall in it. That' right. Face first.
I'm taking my boat to Prime...they look off the hook. I called the other day and they told me a complete re rig on my Wickens would be somewhere around 2500.00 including all the hardware. I cant trust the "Clowns of Carlsbad" to stay off the bottle.....RCL

Lou you are everywhere this morning. You are right about Prime but I must refer to my previous post we are talkin' about a classic v-drive not a Chevette. Add 1 more zero ahead of the decimal point and multiply by 2 and the Wickens will be off the hook!!!!!!!! :rollside:

I've made commitments to all these guys, no way until mid August, but if any of them fall behind before they can get down here(Harland possibly)...Then Maybe!! Don't remember all you need done. Left you a PM with phone numbers give me a call.

The "Clowns of Carlsbad" huh? RCL, I don't even know where to start! I know you're trying to get the smack talk going on the forums here, but, COME ON!! I have a drinking problem!!! What you have never understood is I do this for a LIVING! I have trained my whole career to put my body in perfect shape to drink the amount of alcohol I do! Like my man Dean Martin once said "I don't want to drink, it's just that I have a chemical imbalance where my body NEEDS alcohol to function." You on the other hand are a mere amatuer! 30+ years of you making STOLI the the top selling Vodka in Idaho and waking up most mornings not knowing where you're at and wondering why you feel like you've been sitting on the pointy end of a bicycle seat, does not make one a professional.
As far as Vanbeenan...Yeah, he might have a couple cocktails now and then, but, the guy should be treated like the legend he is. Raced drags and circles since 1963, has two artificial knees and alot of aches and pains to show for it, HELL you'd have to drink a few more cocktails if you were in his shape! Even IF he falls in the cheese dip...He'll eat it off his shirt, so, it doesn't go to waste! I see no issue there! And he STILL wants to get in a Bezer with 850 horses and haul ass! God Bless Him! They don't even use plates in Boise, do they?
The boy"s work at PRIME IS off the Hook! I have a TON of respect for the work they do. I'm just a guy who enjoys doing the best he can with a hacksaw, diegrinder and a handme down drill motor, to help a few friends out with their passion.
Finally RCL, to qoute another great drinker, Joe E. Lewis..."You're not drunk, if you can lay on the floor and still hold on!" Lou you've been slippin' for a LOOOONG time!

I think this would be a great place for me to talk about my experience with Dave. Like so many of you I have a v-drive that I wanted to take to the next level. These boats are a dying bread and should be protected through restorations. (my belief anyway)
I asked on these boards who could do this type of work and Dave's name came up. We communicated through PM's for awhile. Dave was very honest, open and enthusiastic about the project. After almost eight months I called Dave one night in an effort to convince myself this was the thing to do.
I will never forget that conversation. I was very uncertain about doing this. Dave soon put me at ease with his passion for these boats. He assured me that my baby would become his baby. My trust in doing business with Dave grew by the minute. By the end of the conversation we set a tentative date he could take the boat.
When I arrived from Idaho with the boat I was met with the same enthusiasm and energy. Not only from him but also his partner Dick. All of you can see his work on these boards, but what you don't see is just what a great guy Dave is. We have become lifelong friends through this project. I trust him with my life. I look forward to doing more projects with him. And I can honestly say that Dave and Dick are not in this for the money. They have an incredible love for these boats. It shows in everything they do!

Dave and the crew down south are the best. They do awsome work and love it at the same time. He is so fair on price for what they do it probably worries some of the guys that do that kind of work. It's also allot of fun to screw with them...

Who the Fock is Bruce Sanders? Listen, I called Dave last night and had to chomp a little. I told him I guess you can't mess with the annointed one. I hear at least Van Beenan had a sense of humor about it. Ya see, I can hang with Van Beennan. We both trully understand our lot in life. Just a couple a semi fat guys with grey hair and a huge past in boat racing who also happen to do aerial acrobatics into the cheese dip when we drink. And we do drink. As for Dave, he still doesnt think he has a problem. Poor guy, He should just step to the plate and admit it...RCL

Well I see by the quote above from RCL, "The Soft Side" lasted about an hour and a half! Don't let him BS the group...Bruce Flanders and Larry Huffman are his DADDY'S! For those of you who don't know, they are the 2 top motorsports announcers in SoCal. I heard Flanders had Lou hanging on his every word when they raced at Irwindale last year! You gotta figure the only reason Lou started his own Stock Car Association was so he could get behind the mike at every racetrack and DAZZLE the local yokels with his wit...IMAGINE THAT!!! I did hear the he got a gig in the off-season doing the Idaho Gay Rodeo and Sheep Dressing Championships and won the fellas over with his version of the "Huffman Hop".

I got news for you Mr. Future AA member. Bruce Flanders is nothing compared to the golden throat of yours truly. I have been on the mic with the likes of Chris Economaki, James Garner, Parnelli Jones, Danny Sullivan, to name a few. Roger Penske got the best interview of his career by you know who. Larry Rice has tried to imitate me. (of course, to no avail) l can longer stand back and let you fools make a mockery of my career in motorsports. I will stand on the mountains and shout down "I am the greatest". This is what Tony said he would do...RCL
