I am not sure how well the steel screen will flow, but if you take the mesurements I think you can have K&N make ou some replacement filters to take there place and that would help a ton.

hey yellow...
thats a pretty kewl looking arrestor...polished up, it should look awsome...i think it will flow ok with the steel screens...heres a thought...if u turn it end to end (screens faceing front & back)...it will flow alot more air to the carb & i think it will work great...just my .02 cents

Don't just make a statement like that and go away. Explain why it's dangerous.

I would talk with K&N over that. Being they have a whole marine catolog of filters for marine use.

Hey Berk...
i dont want to start an arguement...but...u must be from Calif?...i can prob understand that...everything there is f***ed up...i live in Az & things here are kewl!...besides...as H2OT said...whats the danger prob??...i dont see any...set-up end to end is only flowing more air thru the carb...the screens/filters are still in place...as far as u getting a ticket...u must have done something else wrong or a boat cop had it in for u...cause like Jim said...the filters/screens are USCG approved

Marine Approved per SAE J1928 Flame Arrestor Standard
http://www.knfilters.com/marine/flamearrester.htm
Coast Guard Regulations stipulate that all gasoline-powered watercraft be equipped with flame arrestors. Until now, that meant choosing between a Coast Guard citation or restricted airflow. The K&N Flame Arrestor eliminates the need to choose. K&N’s Flame Arrestor is the performance and safety product that boat owners have been waiting for.

While we're on the subject, Does any 1 have a link that states what does and does not qualify as a flamer arrestor for the USCG. I have never seen anything that was "solid".
I am not really worried about a back fire in a open air jet boat......

I have tried something similar to that, it only had one opening but it was larger. Anyway I lost 400 rpm on a 500 hp motor. My experience is they simply don't flow enough.

See thats exactly what I don't want to happen... I should just keep the old school veloicty stack I have for it...
I don't want to waste $50 buying it, Plus what ever it takes to make it runable( the screens look like they need work.) Then 3 hrs polishing it....I have been dirty crawling under neath house, digging holes, "shi*t and courption", but never as dirty as I was after a 12 hr day 1st grinding then polishing so AL hard wear.

I have a .pdf file that lays it out. PM me with your e-mail address and I can send it to you. 3 main requirements are:
1. Name of manufacturer
2. The word "Marine"
3. The test performed on the flame arrestor (SAE J1928)
If you do not have a covered engine, you do not need to use a flame arrestor. They are also not required on diesel motors such as large yachts.
IMHO, that thing looks restrictive but I'd have to see the dimensions and air intake openings to be certain. If its going on a carb, they like air in to be as verticle as possible such as a v-stack. Remember all the flame arrestor is there for is to keep a backfire contained in the housing and not allow flame to escape and ignite any fumes in the bildge. They do not suppress fire nor do they have to have the words USCG Approved on them.

In some juristrictions, with the motor exposed, the flame arrestor can be replaced by a device that directs the flames away from the passenger compartment. Something like a velocity stack that directs back fires up or scoop that point to the transom, as long as there are no passenger seats aft of the scoop.
