I have a 72 F250 with a 360 that's shot, but it's got the "ribbed" block. Is that anything special? Can I bore it to 390? If I remember, that ribbed block isn't anything special, but I don't remember about the bore. I used to know all this stuff about FE's but it's been so long I've just forgotten.
Thanks for any help.

Doesn't the 360 and the 390 have the same bore? Or at least very very close? I thought the displacement difference between the two was the longer crank stroke of the 390.
I am pretty sure the 360 has a 4.05" bore with a 3.5" and the 390 has a 4.05" bore with a 3.78" stroke.

390=Bore 4.05 Stroke 3.78
360=Bore 4.05 Stroke 3.50

Thanks for any help.The ribbed block is nothing special. The foundry ribbed the core boxes as they were getting old and they knew the FE was getting to the end of the line as far as production was concerned. It wasn't worth the cost of new core molds for an engine with the end in sight. The last FE was installed in passenger cars was 1970 and 76 for trucks. Boring should be held to .030" as core shift was a problem in the later engines unless you sonic check the bores. Use any 390 crank [3.78" stroke] and the 390 rods. Be careful with replacement pistons as mfgs. now have a common piston for both the 360 and 390. If you decide to keep the 3.50" stroke crank the replacement piston may be too far in the hole and the quench will be lost and pinging will be a problem. If you are in the market for a crank then I'd recommend the 3.98 crank [410-428] combine that with a .030" bore will make 416". The 3.98 cranks are available new [aftermarket] and from what I've heard are decently priced. If you decided to go this route you will need a counterweighted flexplate/flywheel or have the crank internally balanced. All factory 410s and 428s are externally balanced, I don't know about the aftermarket cranks as to how they are balanced.

Aw man, even I knew that. Problem is, I'm just too whacked and couldn't get past the "ribbed" part of the question without wanting to post some stupid joke about condoms... :rolleyes: Missed the B&S deal.
